Of the names given I rather like Vai.....but would prefer to say Jeff Beck...if he'd been listed.

Bust it out dude. Maybe someone could start a Zappa forum thread for forum guitarists (or dig up an old one).

IMO, these four make most already mentioned look like fools:
Nels Cline
Andre LaFosse
Mike Keneally
Terje Rypdal

Robin Trower rarely gets mentioned in this type of discussion (I doubt he ever made one of Rolling Stones' Top 100 list) but he was a great guitarist first with Procol Harum and for the last 40 years has been excellent in his solo career. His style was/is similar to Hendrix.

I'm also a big admirer of Bill Nelson (Be Bop Deluxe & solo).

You can tell Trendmonger has never seen this thread. Over 6 years, and still no votes for The Dweez.

Strange that nobody said JIMMY PAGE

And: "living" means just living or still in credible activity?

Anyway my vote goes for Jeff Beck.
Saw him live with Terry Bozzio on drums, I think more than twenty years ago, one of my five best concert.

There's a few greats I can think of.

Dave Mustaine
Marty Friedman
Chris Poland
Chris Broderick
Alex Skolnick
Steve Vai
Yngwie Malmsteen
Dweezil Zappa
