'Nuclear spy' arrested in Egypt

The Egyptian authorities have arrested an engineer who works at the country's nuclear energy agency for spying for Israel, state prosecutors said.

Prosecutor Hisham Badawi told a news conference the Egyptian national had taken reports from his workplace with the aim of exchanging them for money.

Two foreign nationals are also wanted by the authorities, prosecutors said.

Egypt has a small atomic reactor for research purposes but recently unveiled plans for a civilian nuclear programme.

The Egyptian engineer was arrested on 18 February, but news of his detention was withheld until the investigation was completed, prosecutors said.

A government statement named him as Muhammad Sayed Saber Ali, 35. The foreign nationals were named as Irishman Brian Peter and Shiro Izo of Japan.

Strained ties

Egypt is a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which allows countries to build nuclear power stations under international supervision.

Israel is not a signatory and is believed to be the only state in the region with a nuclear arsenal, though it maintains a position of "ambiguity" on its nuclear weapons.

The two countries ended decades of hostility with the Camp David accords in the late 1970s, but ties have been put under strain over a string of espionage cases.

Last September, Egypt said it wanted to revive its nuclear power programme, which was frozen 20 years ago following the Chernobyl disaster in the Soviet Union.

Demand for electricity has been growing in Egypt at an average rate of 7% a year and the country faces worsening power shortages.

Not yet caught, but it is already something:

MI5 row sparks 7/7 inquiry calls

Pressure for a public inquiry into the 7/7 attacks has risen after it was revealed that a parliamentary committee did not see some surveillance material.

The Intelligence and Security Committee probing 7/7 did not see five pictures showing suicide bomber Mohammad Sidique Khan with other terrorist suspects.

Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said there was a fear "that someone was being economical with the evidence".

Data released after the fertiliser bomb plot trial has sparked the controversy.

Security sources say MI5 said it did not reveal the images to the parliamentary committee because they were taken by police officers not MI5 operatives.

On Monday, it emerged at the end of the year-long court case that MI5 had two of the 7 July bombers under surveillance a year before the attacks.

Six photographs

BBC correspondent Mark Easton said that MI5 had Khan's name on file twice as well as his address.

The ISC committee investigating 7/7 only ever saw one MI5 photograph of Khan, which itself was of poor quality, and did not see any of the other five photographs which were obtained by the BBC.

Mr Davis said: "What is clear is that there is a massive difference between what the public know and the impression given by given by the ISC report last year.

"We must have an inquiry which allows us to know what the facts and not feel, as we might do today, that we have been misled."

Feds Arrest 'Spam King' in Seattle

Robert Alan Soloway, a 27-year-old Seattle resident dubbed "Spam King" by federal agents, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with multiple counts of fraud, wire fraud, e-mail fraud, aggravated identity theft, and money laundering. If convicted on the various counts, Soloway could face decades in prison.

"It's good news for consumers," said John Levine, a board member of the Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial E-Mail (CAUCE). "Soloway has been taunting the antispam community and federal officials for years, essentially daring them to come after him, and they finally did."

In a 24-page indictment filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Washington, U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Sullivan said that Soloway has been operating his illegal scheme since November 2003, and sent out tens of millions of spam e-mails in an effort to drum up business for his e-mail advertising software (which in turn would send out additional spam).

Surprise! Hot, young celeb gets her way.
Paris' early release sets horrible precedent for future celebrity violators.

Paris Hilton out of jail
June 7: Paris Hilton has been reassigned from jail to 40 days house arrest.

Hey Mr. GG, I didn't know you could cry your way out of jail?!
I'm going to try that with my student loans. Maybe I won't have to pay off the balance! Maybe crying can be applied to other things like flat tires and rancid milk...maybe it can reverse signs of aging!?
I'm gonna see if it'll bring back my dead dog.

US senator admits 'serious sin'

Image

A Republican senator has apologised for "a very serious sin in my past" after his phone number was linked to an alleged Washington prostitution ring.

David Vitter, a Louisiana senator, said he had asked for and received forgiveness from God and his wife.

Deborah Palfrey, dubbed the "DC Madam", faces charges of running a lucrative city prostitution ring for 13 years.

Ms Palfrey, who says she provided a legal escort service, has said she will call prominent clients to testify.

Mr Vitter's statement, confirmed to the Associated Press by his spokesman, said his telephone number was included on the phone records published on her website on Monday.

The records date from before Mr Vitter ran for the Senate in 2004.

High-profile clients

In the statement, he did not provide details about the exact nature of his "sin", saying he wanted it to remain private out of respect for his family.

"This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible," Mr Vitter said.

"Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and my wife in confession and marriage counselling."

He added that he offered his "deep and sincere apologies" to all he had disappointed.

Ms Palfrey has named other high-profile clients, including former deputy Secretary of State Randall Tobias, who resigned shortly after confirming he had been a client.

Not that I am for the... Death Penalty [Make a Central Scrtutinizer voice here], but this kind of sentence would help to diminish the endemic pestilent corruption here, in Brazil:

China food safety head executed

The former head of China's State Food and Drug Administration, Zheng Xiaoyu, has been executed for corruption, the state-run Xinhua news agency reports.

He was convicted of taking 6.5m yuan ($850,000; £425,400) in bribes and of dereliction of duty at a trial in May.

The bribes were linked to sub-standard medicines, blamed for several deaths.

China has been criticised over a number of recent cases involving tainted goods, and correspondents say Zheng had become a symbol of the crisis.

Zheng had appealed against his sentence, arguing that it was "too severe" and saying he had confessed his crimes and co-operated with police.

But his appeal, heard in mid-June, was rejected shortly afterwards.

Toxic chemicals

Zheng, who headed the administration from 1998 to 2005, was found guilty of accepting bribes from firms to register their products without making them undergo the necessary checks.

Following his sacking, the Chinese government announced an urgent review of about 170,000 medical licences that were awarded during his tenure at the agency.

Zheng's sentence was seen as unusually harsh for such a senior figure, but the BBC's Dan Griffiths in Beijing says the government hopes the execution shows it is getting to grips with the crisis.

However, food and drug safety standards vary widely across the country and reform will be a major challenge, our correspondent adds.

At a news conference in Beijing on Tuesday, the food and drug agency admitted it had a huge job ahead to improve its supervision of safety standards.

"As a developing country, China's food and drug supervision work began late and its foundations are weak," spokeswoman Yan Jiangying said.

"Therefore, the food and drug safety situation is not something we can be optimistic about."

She said Zheng Xiaoyu's case had "brought shame" on the department, adding that anyone who abused their power would be punished.

Chinese officials have already acknowledged that the country could face social unrest and a tarnished image abroad unless improvements are made.

Dozens of people have died in China because of poor quality or fake food and drugs, sparking widespread international fears about the safety of Chinese exports.

Thirteen babies died of malnutrition in 2005 after being fed powdered milk that had no nutritional value.

US inspectors have blamed exported Chinese pet food ingredients, contaminated with melamine, for the deaths of cats and dogs in North America.

And they recently halted shipments of toothpaste from China to investigate reports that they may be contaminated with toxic chemicals.

But isn't that all these slimy assholes need to do? 1) Grab a Bible, 2) Make a clear statement that he has found forgiveness in God, 3) felt the Holy Spirit touch him and 4) taken the Lord Jesus Christ into his heart? Then don't we know all cocksuckers like this shit stain are cleansed of all wrongdoing and gross hypocrisy? God takes care of this shit, so why should anyone apply the laws these stinking turds enacted and upheld for everyone else to them?
