i just found out about this little gem...

http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=24968

for those who don't click the link... fz, bobby martin (grand piano), scott and chad on marian mcpartland's "piano jazz" NPR series from '88. interview along with peaches, oh no, zoot (with mcpartland solo), dolphy's "g.w.", nelson's "stolen moments" (mcparland, frank and bobby solos), mcpartland's take on twenty small cigars, and king kong.

here's the part that's heartbreaking:

"Sadly, this show was lost in the shuffle due to a distribution problem with the Piano Jazz reel-to-reel tapes (prior to most stations switching to satellite feeds to obtain NPR programs), while some conservative station managers refused to air this particular program at all. It also was never added to the rebroadcast schedule, for reasons not clearly known, so it is one of the rarest editions of Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz ever aired."

so... someone out there has to have this sitting in a closet... i didn't find it searching on zappateers... if anyone knows a link, please post... thanks!

Interesting... I just discovered McPartland recently. She seems like a very talented pianist. I like her delivery. Too bad this show seems to have been lost.

I hope this tape is found, it's one of those rare things that truly makes you stand up and pay attention, I was slathering all over the place after reading that article.

Apparently, nobody noticed the date the piece was written or clicked on the picture at the bottom.

imagine a large one dissolving over me with an appropriate carl stalling loony tunes muted trumpet.... "waaah waaah waaaah waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah."

or maybe just "d'oh!" will suffice.

that's one of the best jives yet... and i still wish it were real...

sorry for the false alarm, folks... nothing to see here; move along... move along...

Well, I was already wondering about the legitimacy when I saw the photo at the top:

That's not Frank of 88!

DOH!!!

Sure had me fooled until you mentioned the date! This one should be filed under the "Legends, Myths & Fantasies" heading!

That was not the photo of Frank that I submitted to the website, the guy who photoshopped it used a much earlier photo, which of course blew the gag to most serious Frank Zappa fans. Of which I am one, I saw him in concert several times and did a phone interview with him in 1989. Hope no one was offended terribly by my gag. Someone actually asked Marian about this show and I hadn't told her about the April Fool's piece, I interviewed her many times and saw her perform a number of times over a 20 year period.

By the way, I do have a copy of George Duke's appearance on Piano Jazz, though the only Zappa tune he plays is a brief excerpt of "Echidna's Arf (Of You)."
