Hi,

I'm thinking of getting a custom FZ tribute SG made and I'd like to get a close look at some of the SGs he's played. I'm not having any luck getting any good pics. The one below is about the best one I've found. I'd love to get a closer shot of this one (he plays it on Baby Snakes) with the star inlays. Anyone got a stash of good FZ SG pics?

Thanks for any help.

Dave

Image

P.S. What the hell is the inlay at the 12th fret? It looks like laurel (not the one from notre dame).

That's a rare one Elvis is playing
an early Gibson double-neck six-string bass and guitar
check the inlays...the top neck is longer

and Ike playing a Les Paul....unusual I think...he's a strat man

George is playing a Yamaha CP70 electric piano

looking at Frank's rack I can see (top to bottom) an Alembic preamp,
a Dynacomp (compressor), an Eventide Harmoniser, 3 silver racks
(probably custom) and a Urei 1176 compressor at the bottom.

There's probably a better pic of his rack somewhere..I'll check

yeah...you're right ..it's a dBx
can't find a good pic of that rack...must be one somewhere

there were a few clues when Dweezil auctioned off some of the gear
there was a Quantec Room Simulator going cheap $200
I figured it probably didn't work at that price

The picture is a hoax made for fun by someone a few years ago, where people tried to guess the year of this picture of Frank (I guess the consensus became 1978). Duke was been put into the picture for fun.

As for Ike, I don't think it is a Les Paul. He played in 78 some semi-acoustic guitar, I can't name right now.

yeah...now that I look..it is hoaxed
why would Ike be out of focus and George in focus?...heh

Ike might've been playing Frank's ES-355TD if it's a semi
EDIT: no it's not an ES-355..cos it doesn't have the big split diamond on the headstock
must be a jazz box....a Byrdland perhaps

I never did get that SG copy made. The guy I was going to commission to do it wanted more than I wanted to pay for one. Still SG-less for now. Have plenty of other axes to play in the meantime.

I thought a used Gibson SG Special (Heritage custom shop) would be a good
basis for duplicating Frank's original SG

You'd still have to rout it for humbuckers, and buy a Maestro tailpiece, but that's what I'd do if I was in the states

I don't think I'd find a used one in OZ....but there must be some floating around over in the US

Looking at the photo MH 78 bbc studio,Frank same night as the trick or treat on halloween dvd audio and Ike same night not LP or switchmaster look's like switchmaster shape.being the ES means the shape is E same size horns on body.

Why would you do that and not just get a regular SG, or even an (historic) SG from the custom shop?

My reason for having a luthier do it was that I wanted better quality than Gibson is giving any more. But ultimately I didn't want to spend that much on an SG, which is a style of guitar I've not naturally gravitated toward. I figure if I stumble on to a good deal for a simple SG that's close enough, I'll jump on it to round out my collection a little. It doesn't really have to be an exact copy of Frank's SG.

yeah..I forgot if it was called Heritage or Historic, but I did try one of those SG Special reissues at Jackson's
It was a real nice axe...but it was $7K...stupid
I just thought you may find one cheap in the states
I've had a few SG's..a '61 Les Paul/SG Custom (with wooden tailpiece), and a '66 (Angus style) when I was a teen
Those early Ibanez copies are pretty damn good if you just want a cheapie
Most of the Ibanez's in Oz were turned into Gibson's in the 80's....by unscrupulous luthiers here...I've come across quite a few conversions

sorry but I thought you wanted to duplicate Frank's SG...which means dot
inlay and no crown on the headstock, small scratchplate etc

No, ES means Electric Semi-acoustic
the ES-150 was the first (non-lap steel) electric guitar (Charlie Christian model)
and SG means Solid Guitar

It's probably the Switchmaster in that shot
I realised Byrdlands have the flowerpot headstock inlay
did Frank have 2 different Switchmasters?
I thought I saw one with P-90 pickups..as well as the humbucking one

Y'know, those Switchmasters were real unpopular with the jazz guys
(because the middle pickup interfered with picking)
I saw two different ones go for $200 here in Oz in 1972-3
Frank might have got his real cheap at the time

yeah...you're right Electric Spanish...I'd forgotten
and sorry I hadn't seen you mention that there was more than one Switchmaster
I think there's a pic in Freak Out of the single coil one...I saw it somewhere

I checked that second link (Suicide Chump)
Ike's playing an Ibanez Professional 2681 (Bob Weir model)
(John McLaughlin played a doubleneck version of it)

I had a brown one in the 80's..without the tree-of-life inlay
