The reason why it has not been released is:

i- It is not an un-tape of substandard audio content like 'Menage'

ii- It is not snippets and disjointed left-overs from random dates and places, edited together in a hurry in order to find out 'how fast one can make a record', like 'One Shot Deal'

iii- Judging from the stuff he was working on at the time (CPIII, that is), this material should be HEAVEN and sonically state-of-the-art -- not much left to fiddle around for Joe and the crew :|

iv- The cover art is not ready

v- Somebody has mislaid the masters in 1996 or '97

vi- It's only 9:38 long, or why, in all seriousness, should someone come to a decision and hold back a finished album by a major artist for SIXTEEN f*&%in' years?!?

vii- This is material that Frank clearly wanted to see released, along with R&TF, and which is an integral part of his legacy - as opposed to OSD, WAZOO, OZ, ID, Buffalo, WHICH ARE NOT (they're supplements, nice ones (and expensive ones :P )

Oh boy, I was 17 (!) when I first heard of its existence. I can’t believe I spent the other half of my life so far, waiting for its release

Hopefully, Pierre Boulez has a cassette copy of it, he might be interested

DMT and the Roxy footage are like having money in the bank...even better than money, more like gold. Don't worry, I'm sure Diva will release them by 2032.

this & Rage & the Fury are two that I have been waiting for - i understand the Varese one may never come out because of legal reasons which is a shame, but what is the hold up on Dance Me This? Would be nice to get some sort of feedback from the ZFT on it.

Dance me this is perhaps the holy grail product for the ZFT. The longer they leave it the more anticipation will build. I mean if they released it now, the hardcore fans would be delighted but wait another 20 years, perhaps Frank's profile will be viewed by the masses more favourably resulting in a lot more hype.

My other theory is that Dance me this was a project of Frank's and nothing more. It is not an album. I know FZ mentioned it was done but maybe he raided it to add to CP3. It would be nice to know. Come on Gail?

I speculate it is one of those projects that is best suited to accompany
a dance company project where hopefully a live ensemble would perform the material.

Truthfully I just don't think there is a big market for Synclavier Music.
Fr al anyone knows just throwing the Synclaver Music out there
could be short changing FZs visionof what he wanted done with the project.
Maybe we could get a ODD release of the Synclavier Project
but if it were me I'd present it with a dance company as a premiere, live music, produce a video
and package everything as a linear work in progress project that FZ never got a chance to
see a dance company work with the material but the ZFT finished FZs vision.
But what the fuck do I know.

Maybe it just plain sucks and is not worthy of an official release?

Maybe it was released on Amazon 2 years ago and they didn't tell anybody?

(Checks Amazon)......nope, that's not it

Really? Wow! Didn't know that.

I believe there's plenty of synclavier stuff from Frank.

I think I was making a valid point...framed in a humorous way.
Maybe it's simply not that interesting a release. Not something Gail considers Legacy worthy.
The synclavier can be touchy...I think it sounds outdated to some people.
Of course those people are total idiots and have no clue as to the history of electronic music but that is beside the point.

I think there is a market for Frank Zappa American Composer. It just happens that Zappa's last compositions of his life are in Synclavier format. Therefore I consider the Zappa Synclavier Music to be the most important thing in the vault. To me, above everything else Zappa did so brilliantly, his compositions are at the heart of his genius and appeal.

My understanding is there are hundreds of compositions Frank was working on with the Synclavier in his final years. Probably much of this will be uncompleted but we know there are completed compositions such as the Wolf Harbor works.
It doesn't really matter what the Synclavier performance of these compositions are like, what matters is these are Zappa's final works and that makes them an incredibly valuable artwork that matters to all mankind. Perhaps it is egotistic and irresponsible to not releases these. Such important works should be released, even if it means releasing the compositions only on paper. They should be released to complete Franks entire body of work. They should be released for other musicians to perform.

Where on Lost Episodes? If you're referring to Basement Music #1, that's all synths circa '78, no synclavier.

Dig it:

The Synclavier is the orchestration on the spoken word version of Grand Wazoo on the Lost Episodes.
