Just an inside Forum joke. After the trailer came out; first on this site, then on Baby Snakes, people have been repeatedly asking the same question. So at some point, Forum regulars got tired of exlpaining the whole deal about lack of time, finances to finish the product, etc. etc. ad nauseum. So jaypfunk provided just the exploding head as the short answer.

I still think it is good. I mean, I respect the ZFT's need for time and finances, but this seems to be an instance where technological progress actually can kill a project. The show was shot in 1973 probably with some TV in mind or a film. Something that in all likelihood would be consumed in shitty mono. Now we are waiting because more and more ressources are needed to make it into DTS x.y super-duper Dobly in z bit resolution (where x, y and z are numbers that increases every year).

Or maybe the film and sound is just out of sync? But the half hour played at the ZPZ show was downright great and in sync. And sync issues should be one of the things where technological progress has made things easier.

But of course, I am just speculating about something I don't really know anything about. Hence, the head from Scanners is perhaps still the best "answer".

I've been wanting to see this show just about as long as i have been a fan of zappa. If any one can find out more about their issues with this release, I can offer my assistance. I'm a filmmaker that has great connections in the post production world. I'm sure I can problem solve their issues and find a high quality, inexpensive solution.

lets scan that 16mm to 4K!

I spoke with DZ in 2003 concerning the sync issues they were having at that time with material that has been released. Although they have resolved these at least once before, apparently nothing has gotten any easier about using old film and 4 track recordings and reformatting same into a currently acceptable product.

With out hearing the exact issues in sync it is very difficult to make a proper comment, but I will say that it is very easy nowadays to deal with "sync" issues. Time has most certainly made these problems easier and affordable. As I stated before I can get the film rescanned at 4k and put down to any format and frame rate they need.

I bet Uncle Frankie would be able to sort it.

Edit; did we come to the conclusion that it was acceptable to call him Uncle Frankie?

Frank would have had it finished by at least 1996! 13 years and still waiting.
I'm serious that I will help and use my connections to get this done. I can get the film rescanned and color graded to 4k at any frame rate for about $2,000, where anywhere else it would cost $40,000 or more.

ZFT please hear me and let me help!

Dweezil and I just spoke and we’re getting ready to begin post production on his upcoming DVD release.

This upcoming Dweezil DVD release features recent Zappa Plays Zappa content shot at the Roxy in LA in and Hogg Auditorium in Austin.

I directed/produced the Roxy and Hogg shows. Frank Zappa’s original Roxy show will release before we drop Zappa Plays Zappa “Son of Roxy”

Give me half a dozen for the hotel room.....

"It's good to see these projects outsourced to someone who hopefully understands deadlines and meeting customers expectations. I am sure the ZFT trust won't allow their vendors to treat them the way the ZFT treats their own customers. Now, if we can only get Charlie on those damn downloads."

Gimme a non-overcompressed copy spread over 3 DVDs in a non-deluxe cardboard slipcase, rubber-stamped "FZ Roxy Vols. I-III" and a readable paper insert with credits and tracklist, for under $35 :)

...and maybe a quality hardbound version for Trendy to stick his weenie in...)
