I posted this under randemonium but thought it might get a better response here. Sorry for any duplication.

I wonder if the ZFT or any of the guitar companies ever approached one another in the interest of making a Zappa signature model? I remember talking to Reeves Gabrels one night (once guitarist for Bowie, etc) and he told me that he was shown a notebook by some famous guitar tech type and that Reeves saw a page with the mods made to FZ's SG (electronic). How cool would a sig FZ SG be? Shocked Let me answer: Pretty fuckin' cool! 8)

I do believe that it may be a Hagstrom Viking as he used to endorse them.

-Martin’s Dick Boak helped us identify this guitar, which is a D-18S 12-fret “standard” Dreadnought with a slotted headstock; Brazilian rosewood fretboard, headplate, and bridge; and mahogany back and sides. It was used on the 1974 recording of “Sleep Dirt” and the tune “Blessed Relief” from The Grand Wazoo. Zappa traded a Telecaster to get the Martin from its owner, Mark Volman (a.k.a “Flo”) from Zappa’s early-’70’s Flo and Eddie lineup.
ASK VOLMAN :|
i think he said he said 22 guitars

The Martin D-18S is quite a sought after instrument....often referred to as the
'Clarence White' model..they sound better than a 14 fret model because the
bridge is further back...a real fave model for flatpickers (which is probably
why Frank loved the tone) I think he did a good swap for the Tele

man, I can't believe how many mistakes are in the Zappa equipment page
(all credit to the guy for trying though)
Frank's original SG Special was not black...it was cherry
it didn't have a Bigsby, but a Gibson Vibrola
the SG with the mirror scratchplate was not a different guitar, but the same one modified
the Hendrix strat was not red....but sunburst
the Les Paul Custom was not red...it was cherry sunburst
the Black Widow was made by Acoustic, and it was fretless....there were
no other fretless guitars unless Frank had another one custom made
(which I've never heard of)
Frank didn't go and have his custom SG made....from memory, some fan
made it and presented it to him at a gig (don't know if any money changed hands)
Also, the other Les Paul shaped guitar is most likely the Jacobacci Frank
bought in Europe after the casino fire
(there's a pic of Frank playing it when he was in his wheelchair)

I've seen Frank pictured with other guitars...but I don't know if he owned them
(a nice Gibson ES-355TD for example)

I just Noticed the guitars on.

look correct The new Dweezil interview got the same Switchmaster with the Traducer Pickup just below the bridge pick up And the SG with white headstock is red take a look at the sides, just got some big old scratch plate covering the rest of the body.

The viking shows up on there.
I don't think that FZ ever used one though.

One of the instruments he used was a twelve string guitar with custom tunings. I don't know where to get the details though.

Is 'The Ocean' from the same period as some of the longer pieces of the 'Shut up and play your guitar' Box Set? I know FZ played a bouzouki etc. I think the 12 String could have been the Fender Hockey Stick. I know FZ had a Rickenbacker 12 String at one time, although I have not seen a photo of it

I was notified someone emailed me, but I can't read the email (as new user [odd policy: "you've got mail {but you can't read it}" :? ].

I posted that Zappa played xylophone, with pickups; which is percussion, but just to be more specific.

From the Greek words ξύλον - xylon, "wood" + φωνή - phone, "voice", meaning "wooden sound") is a musical instrument in the percussion family indeed. Well spotted danR.

I didn't send you that private message.

IB: One of the songs I liked from that period was ‘The Ocean Is The Ultimate Solution’, with you and Patrick O’Hearn.

TB: Yeah, actually what happened was me and Dave Parlato and Frank jammed at the Record Plant for about 35 minutes – filled up two reels of tape. And Zappa, out of all that material, edited it down to about 13 minutes. And he played it on a real interesting Fender 12-string that had a Barcus Berry in the neck. He had the bottom strings turned to Major 7ths …I think he had every string tuned to a different interval, so it was like a Major 7th then a Minor 7th. The next ones were, you know, a tri-tone Major 3rd and a Minor 3rd. And he had the low strings panned left, and the high strings panned right, and the Barcus Berry panned centre; he had this glass-shattering 12-string sound, it was really unique. So we just jammed. And then he…Patrick was playing with Joe Henderson at the Lighthouse and I went to see him play one night. He was staying at my house. I brought him home. And he had this big bass in the car. He didn’t want to leave it in the car, so he brought it inside. And that was how Patrick auditioned for Frank. You know, Frank said, “You play that thing?” Patrick said “Yeah!” He goes “Whip it out” And he put him in the studio. Patrick had already played a gig at 2 or 3 in the morning and he had to play ‘The Ocean Is The Ultimate Solution’ as sort of an audition. So he got the gig, and played great bass through it. And Frank put an electric guitar solo on there. It was fun.

I'm not sure what notes the open strings would be :?

Correction: I meant to write vibraphone, not xylophone, but the latter too I guess.
