As soon as I read the topic title I thought of Audacity, but you got there first :D

GIMP (Gnu image manipulation program). If you are a hobby-photographer, you can spend your money for a good camera instead for expensive software. Has nothing to do with Gnus.
http://www.gimp.org/

OPEN OFFFICE, they write about themselves: OpenOffice.org 3 is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages.
http://why.openoffice.org/

LUPE PEN SUITE, over 100 softwareapplications stored on a usb-stick (for example the both above). the purpose is portable use, you can use a lot of free software on other computers with it.
http://www.lupopensuite.com/index.htm

UBUNTU installed with WUBI installer. ubuntu is a very succesful version of LINUX (free alternative operating system for PCs). Normally you add it as a second OS to your windows by dividing your harddrive into several partitions. This can cause problems, if you want finally remove it from your PC for example. If you install it with the WUBI-installer, you can uninstall it like a usual windowsprogram.
http://wubi-installer.org/

more special graphics-tools:

INKSCAPE: editor for vector-graphics
http://www.inkscape.org/

BLENDER3D: editor for 3D-stills and movies. extremely hard to learn but very exciting. commercial programs that are similary capable cost usually a few 1000 bucks.

Not really. The free version added a vocal "Recorded using AVS Recording System" to the begining of each track AND, at intervals, overtop of the music. You have to buy it, to get rid of the voice.

Maybe this works:

U also can download clips via http://keepvid.com/ as mp4.
Another free video converter is http://www.virtualdub.org/ (also included in the http://www.lupopensuite.com/index.htm like GIMP and many more).
I don't knoe, if any of these can convert to animated GIF. GIMP can make such GIFs, u need to import each single image as layer in GIMP, depending on the number of frames u need, it would be a very endless work...
Edith says: U can drag and drop the single images alltogether into the layer-window of GIMP, i just tried it (u can use SUPER for example to convert a video into a stack of single images). If there existed no easier to use converter, this should be a possible way.
