ZINY is def underrated and was kinda a flop when it came out but now on the other side of things all these years later it is revered as one of FZs best. I 1st bought it on 8 track for 99 cents in 1979 from the cut-out bin at Woolworths!

ZINY might have done better initially if not for the Zappa/Warners war.

ZINY has always been pretty popular in Norway, and we even made our own pressing of it back in '78 8) But of course it would have been even more popular with the original programme, including Punky's Whips. That's a killer album! I know, because I have the 1977 UK Discreet edition.

My vote for most underrated Zappa album goes to FZMTMOP - another dynamite show 8)

I'd say Waka/Jawaka.

Zoot Allures. Always pops up in "worst album"-discussions, but is one of his greatest.

As I recall 200 Motels was voted Worst Album of the Year by some critics. If that doesn't qualify as underrated I don't know what does. My only complaint about the album was the quality of the pressing. I'm on my second copy, using high quality styli (is that really the plural of stylus?) and it still sounds very poor. In this case I caved and bought the CD version and in this one instance, I prefer the CD. You won't see me saying that very often.

absolutely free - always seems to take a back seat to freak out and woiiftm, but i prefer it to both.

burnt weeny sandwich - amazing instrumental compositions sandwiched between 2 excellent do-wop songs...it doesn't get much better than that.

weasels ripped my flesh - a fantastically eclectic mix of stuff. sometimes in the same song.

ziny - what a band! the purple lagoon is worth the price alone. my favorite version of sofa. phenomenal guitar solo on cruisin for burgers.

them or us - my favorite fz release of the 80's.

Thing-Fish's merits are never seen by anyone but me, so it seems.

To his credit, Isaac rates this album as well. I'm certainly less horrified by it than I was when it first came out, in fact I appreciate quite a bit of it. The only thing I still can't get over is that he didn't write all new music for it.

I've always said that Thing Fish is one of FZ most underrated albums and deserved more attention. I mean you get to hear the premises of "Amnerika" in there if you listen closely....

Agree on both, and I LOVE Fillmore East '71 it is till so funny to me (and Lonesome Electric Turkey, so cool).

This was Zappa's last new album, in the sense of a One Size Fits All or a Them or Us, that is, a new album with new material. Okay, people will argue there are reworked tracks on it, but it was overall a new album.

People will also argue that Yellow Shark and CiviIization Phaze III were his last new albums, but I'm referring to his live jazz/rock type band albums. BTW, I'm not saying I don't like those more "serious" albums at all, they're great.

I didn't get into BTH right away, but over time it grew on me and I find it his most mature of that type of album. Mind you, I have the CD version, which is a much better package than the original vinyl release. It's a tour de force and worth finding a quiet time slot to listen through uninterrupted.
