DENNY WALLEY:

“In December we will be releasing an album on Zappa records which will include previously unreleased tracks I recorded with Don before we parted company in 1978. There are takes from sessions of Doc at the Radar Station and Shiny Beast albums that have never before been mastered and released apart from the odd bootleg. There is one track with me playing acoustic guitar and Don singing called Hoboism – it sounds incredible.”

Pre-ordered! So Music Today calls this a Frank Zappa release... I wonder if the ZFT will continue to call it an FZ album - or is there an end to the meanness?

So glad this is coming, though, and I'll try not to think about AGZ when I listen to it...

Was there an email announcement for this? Just curious, because some people said they did not get the Carnegie email.

Pull my chain, and give my _ _ _ a rest: This is to be coming out, at last? A mere 12 months post-schedule-date?
How would I've loved this for DMT and Rage and the Fury!!!
:)

Working on all-too detailed cover art can become a bit tedious, right?

John "Drumbo" French: "Just had a short talk with Gail about this. I love the simplicity of the cover. "Beefheart" says it all."

The original album (that will be released January 15th) couldn't be released at the time because of litigation between FZ and Herb Cohen (I think I got that right?). The one you own are re-recordings of some of the same songs plus some other stuff. According to those in the know (musicians that were involved, etc.) the original takes and album were superior to the Shiny Beast version. Shiny Beast happens to be one of my favorite CB albums so it will be interesting to compare the two.

This is a wonderful CD - the great lost album + some amazing bonus tracks, including Hoboism and the Candle Mambo that Frank nixed in 1976 (because it was stylistically out of place - not bad)... And finally John French gets his due credit as musical director. I only wish Don could have seen this - 35 years ago. Rest in peace, man - love your art!

per gz, the record is/was not produced by fz.
yes, orig release crushed due to cohen/zappa fallout...and probably dons contractural problems.
most cuts ended up in different versions on the last 3 proper beefheart records.
2 cuts not anywhere also.
me happy with the bonus cuts.

don't pile on gail. she broke her silence to announce this on the day, praise her.
the fz thing is surely just an error. take it easy ye paranoid.
and duh, it was held up for a year 'cause don died.

Well, bp - I may be paranoid, but you're too loyal to AGZ for your own good... John French states that Don Van Vliet and Frank Zappa were the producers of the album (check page 834 of his book), but you say it cannot be so, because that's what AGZ sez. I know Frank didn't produce this like he did TMR, but the money came from DisCreet/Zappa, and Frank made artistic decisions like the nixing of Candle Mambo. I don't think the album could have existed without Frank's participation. He produced it, without sitting and discussing every musical detail in the recording process, like he did on TMR.

Remember - just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean there's nobody following you. Pauline Butcher calls Gail a skilled manipulator. Don't let yourself be manipulated. I'm thankful that this is out, but that's after 35 years of Zappa family suppression - God knows why...
