That's me wasting time with a very primitive rhythm box, a Rhythm Ace, fed into a flanger. The music was done on a synthesizer called a Synkey. It was all played live, with no overdubs.

It's always been a kind of paradox to me that the music he made with that cheap piece of eh... equipment is more viscerally exciting than much of the music he made on the hi-tec, expensive Synclavier... Basement Music from The Lost Episodes hit home much faster for me than Jazz From Hell, f'rinstance.

I hate to say it, but that bit of knowledge has dampened my opinion of the stuff. Since I don't own one of these devices, I'm forced to interpret the information in the links to mean that much of the material is modified stock sequences run through a flanger or other fx. Maybe youse guys can tell me I'm wrong and change my opinion.

Well...what else would one expect a rhythm machine to do back in '78? Choose one of the 50-or-so presets, hit the button, and off it goes.... http://www.vintagesynth.com/roland/cr68.php

:)

Love the analytic early poly-sound of the Synkey, though...which of course is FZ, playing real-time (with some genuine composer's technique)
