Heya cleon! I don't think Hendrix ever heard of Billy Gibbons.He was dead 8-10yrs before ZZ-Tops, Illiminator came out.The time line doesn't fit.

Your right about Billy Gibbons,he's great in concert and he makes it look soo easy too! I heard he was a big Hendrix fan also.Fer sure he's underated,but with the Hendrix tour and stuff he's starting to get his due.About freakin' time too!

Hard to say ... because my preference is to want to say that most rock guitarists are unbelievably over rated ... and not true musicians at all, at least within a classical music context, in terms of ability and experience.

Jimmy Page ... when you see "It's gonna get loud" ... one's opinion of him might change. But I think what hurt him might have been that he was too ripped, or stoned to do more ... and since then he has not been able to do a whole lot that is any better or more interesting than his previous work. I keep joking that he just needs to go have a few with Roy Harper and I'm sure the muse will come!

In terms of these days, I would say a lot of the metal/prog guitarists are grossly over rated. However, when one sits through the Dream Theater concert with a full orchestra, it's very tough to not appreciate the musicianship involved, and if Mike was playing a violin everyone would say he is a maestro ... but no, he's playing a loud guitar. I'm not sure he should be considered "over rated" but I would almost say that he is not really spreading his wings beyond the format that he is using which is simplistic to say the least, but his individual playing is much wider than that ... it's just being wasted on a rock format!

I, personally, do not look at many guitarists as major musicians, because there are way too many different things out there ... every one clamors for Eric (he is over rated) and no one has heard Manuel Gottshing solo his way with Klaus Schulze (In Blue) ... meaning that few people have any idea that the guitar can do something else other than just yet another song for the radio, or piece that you have heard umpteen times before.

So, in general ... I think almost all rock guitarists are over rated ... and that includes Dweezil btw ... though he might want to show off something clever that supposedly shows how much more intelligent of a musician he is ... and that's more like trickery than it is ... pure magic!

What does anyone think of Dave Meniketti from Y&T? They've influenced alot of bands and have had the same manager as Journey for years,but never turned the corner on fame.They have sold 4 million records world wide,since their first album and they put on a rockin' show too.

Yea ZZ top started around 69, with different bass and drums, but that first lp was early 71.

I did not know that.When Beard and Gibbons talked about the name ZZ-top on some TV show they said: "it just came up while traveling" That was in the 80's,but my point being,where they known as ZZ-Top in `69 -`71?... or was that after Beard became the drummer? In `71 maybe? (Beards the one without the beard.Ironic or not) Do you know if the drummer (Beard) was on the first LP too?

Some of the teens they attracted back in Oakland might disagree.The last time I saw them in Sacramento,I was a head taller than anyone! But I braved it anyway.I was tryin' to see an old friend that's passed now,Phil Kennemore.He was the bassist and a friend of mine.We went to HS shortly then had the same girlfriends at different times and well we all sort off partied together.....it wasn't an orgy thing at all! He was a funny guy and his brother (brain cancer`93) was always around and that guy could fix anything electric....and make great light shows and some explosions too! Anyway at the show security wouldn't let me get a note to him.His manager came out and gave me the old "if everyone that handed me a note,blah,blah"....Saw him throw it in the trash so I could see him do it to! Nice friggin' guy eh? The big hair 'tude was rude.I don't think Phil saw me in the balcony!
Thanx cal,Phil's gone now anyway(throat cancer 1yr. ago Jan.) and I was on the fence whether to drive 2 hrs. and back or not to see them at Chico's El Rey theater.He does have some credits for song writing,I was wondering if they were any good.
