I'm getting the idea now that the instructions to new members could be a lot more helpful. I get that the administrators of this forum are limited by the features of the forum (and that they are trying to keep spammers away, as the activation instructions make perfectly clear), but now that I know that I can post immediately in the "Frequently Asked Questions" forum it means that there is a way that us newbies can ask for direct help from forum members. I can see that there are other new members here that are still struggling with this process.

So now I know that 10 posts is not enough. New members have to try and post in the main forums and then have those posts checked before they can fully participate. This process really should be clearer and more informative.

Well, guess what, now I can post anywhere and the posts I was told that needed to be checked still haven't appeared. Very obscure.

Now, after three days, the posts that were being checked have appeared. In context perhaps, but everyone's moved on. It seems to me this process could be a lot less obscure and frustrating for genuine new members.

I am actually a long time member and my aim has been to find out what this joining process is like for new members as I noticed that quite a few were having difficulties. My conclusion is that they're not idiots and this process really is weird and it's making them feel like idiots and we could do a lot better.

The whole problem of it is that it's not working. Spammers have been able to render this forum unusable with their posts. The only way to prevent spam on a major forum is round the clock administration.

Not only the spammers seem to have moved on. Not only the public in general seems to have lost interest in FZ, but many fans too, judging from this forum which became a rather deserted place.

I own and run a forum and find that for a forum to attract new members it needs to have an atmosphere where new members feel comfortable about asking questions without the fear of being made to feel that they are stoopid.

Forums that have been around for awhile generally have a core group of posters and sometimes the way these people treat new members is the thing that will help keep new members and attract more members.

These core posters can sometimes appear to be cliques that can intimidate new members and through their actions discourage people from posting questions that may appear to the long term members irrelevant or just plain silly.

What people have to remember is that generally if someone joins a forum they are looking for answers and that not everyone has the same level of knowledge on a subject.

We definitely have at least one person who is that unwelcoming: besides that, what does a new person talk about here or anywhere? How he got into Zappa, what albums he has, which ones he should get next, which one's the best, which one's the worst. It's been rubbed in the ground for us oldbies.

Spammers come here: daily. Check what members joined yesterday, or who is having a birthday. One way in which spammers operate is by making a new account that links to a fake website that contains malware. That is spam too. A forum that's open and discovered by spammers will attract 10 to 30 fake accounts per day. It was all I did on my site, that's why I limited new membership to people who contact me personally.

What has not been explained to you is the word "forum" applies to each of the sub forums here. You can do those things in this sub forum. Go to the Randomonium sub forum and you'll possibly see something different. They're not checking your posts in the "Frequently Asked Questions" sub forum or the "Zappa Forum Announcements" sub forum, they're only checking your posts in the main sub forums.

Don't worry, it will eventually sort itself out. It's nothing to do with us that are posting here. It seems this forum is not a very high priority for the ZFT. Don't let that put you off.

When you say "no luck yet", are you not seeing your posts in this sub forum?
