Hi,

Goodness ... can you post an easier and more fun, stupid'er question?

Ok .. . editorial aside ...

- Jim Morrison, for expression and content
- Janis Joplin, for not having any feelings left to live the rest of her life
- Sandy Denny, for reminding us that there is some wonderful stuff out there that we never bother to hear!
- Peter Hammill, for having been honest to what the inner light, life and truth always is, and show us, that singing is about the words, not the notes!

Honestly, I really think that the majority of "lead singers" are overblown, infatuated folks more in kindred spirits with the commercial sounding thing, than they are with the very music they are playing and singing to/with. Not to mention that what many of these folks are singing is the worst shit ever written by man, idiot or monkee!

Well the topic is lead singers, any one , go play some Leon thomas, maybe start with his work with Pharoah sanders, or the live stuff from 1973 when he toured with Santana.

I don't know how y'all define "Lead singer." But if it doesn't include Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James, I'm not playing...

And Billie Holiday, anyone say Billie Holiday yet? Nina Simone? Tina Turner?

'Course, when it comes to best technically, Yma Sumac beats them all, with a 5-octave vocal range and enormous amount of vocal skills.

Van Morrison's gotta be in the top ten.I always and still do like Taj Mahals pipes. Then all the Motown crowd,Smokey Robinson, the wicked Wilson Picket,Sam Cook, and one of my favorites Otis Redding and of course Marvin gaye. From the west coast NMB,the world famous Ray White and Ike Willis. With a friendly mention for Flo and Eddie,Fey Waybill, and all the dead singers from Tower of Power.
Then there's Nat King Cole. 8)
