My kid is a sophomore in high school, and plays on the varsity baseball team . Currently the team is in the final four of the Illinois state championship series. At this level of the playoffs, every team is good, every player is inspired, and the competition is a thrill to watch. It's pretty cool to watch my son making these life long memories, developing trusting and strong relationships with his teammates, learning the sport at a higher level, understanding playing as a team, handling the press (believe it or not!), and just having a really great time.

Enjoying this through my son's eyes has made all the difference in my love for the game and in sports generally. It is also really a nice thing between my son and I. It's easy to dismiss sports because there are so many important things in life. Sometimes the simplest thing has great value in unexpected ways.

Yup. And I'm proud to say that everything I taught him about baseball growing up turned out to be wrong.

My kid's team won the semi-final yesterday (despite his terrible day at the plate). So today it's on to the IL state championship. This is as fun as can be! The boys of summer....

That is so funny. We won the game in almost exactly that way, except it wasn't my son with the walk- off hit. It was a tense, wonderful game against a rivalry opponent. Illinois state champs!

Unfortunately the place was crawling with college scouts, but my kid had a pretty rough day... But it's all good anyway.. :)

Here he is getting jammed in the semi....

No broken bat; it's metal. That pitcher was throwing in the low 90s, and he didn't mind going inside. Scares the crap out of me, but these players like the challenge.

yeah same here. like spending countless hours teaching my son to run directly from first to third by crossing the pitcher's mound. who knew you couldn't do that??

Hahahaha! I remember that from T-ball. In t-ball my son was basically the most competent one on the team. This manifested by playing right field, and every time the ball was hit anywhere on the field, he'd go get it and chase down any runners himself. To hell with throwing it to a teammate, he just did it himself.

Glad he stopped doing that. :D

no, but the giants just pummeled the detroit pussies [again] ... it would be great to see a sweep, but there's a slim possibility the last fucking game could be played here on halloween, and if you've ever been to sf on halloween, you'd know it goes way beyond bongos in the dirt, & combining halloween with a world series win would detonate a seismic party eruption big enough to set off another 7.1 quake
