I'd have to pick 1970-1973 for groundbreaking albums and some new musical styles. If I owned a car from this era, this would be it's soundtrack.

Black Sabbath
Allman Brothers
Cactus
Alice Cooper
The James Gang
The Spinners
Marvin Gaye
Van Morrison
Jethro Tull
Deep Purple
Grand Funk Railroad
Led Zeppelin
Curtis Mayfield
The Stooges
T.Rex
The Rolling Stones
The MC5
Herbie Hancock
Steely Dan
Stevie Wonder
The Who
Faces
David Bowie
Pink Floyd
Yes
Soft Machine
Mountain
Neil Young
FZ
...among others

For me, I'd say 1974-1978, because this is when our town got our first FM radio station. I stopped listening to Top 40, and discovered all these fabulous artists (obviously FZ). Good time to start, plus Punk was on the way in also.

What strikes me about Milton's list is the variety. Could you put together an equally diverse list of current musical phenomena involving people at the same age as they were then?

What you said, Miltie. There had been other good years in music history as well. But when I started to discover the real good music around 1974/75 I was curious what happened before. I think the time between 1970 and 1973 impressed me the most.

Really DB? Fleetwood Mac's Rumours? I'd have thought Then Play On,Kiln House.English Rose, any of the Peter Green's Mac,before any Buckingham - Nicks - McVie coined albums would come first. That's just imho of course.

And much more ... Amon Duul 2 ... PFM ... Banco del Mutturo Soccorso ... Ange ... The Cosmic Couriers ... Ash Ra Tempel ... Vangelis ... Mike Oldfield ... Egberto Gismonti ... Keith Jarrett (Koln era!) ... Jan Garbarek ... Terje Rypdal ... YES ... Genesis ... many others.

In essence, this was the time when rock music came alive and did things ... that showed that the youngsters also could do real music ... and I believe Frank was a real part of that.

The bad side of it, is that it was also during that time that FM radio grew up and sold out ... and became just another AM station, so that by 1975, the majority of original stuff was already going out in favor of the "hits" and bigger name bands, and LZ, Who, Moody Blues, Doors, etc, etc ... dominated the landscape. Still nice, but not as nice and open as the more original and free form days before it.

And as time went by, FM became more and more just another top ten and classical rock station ... and today is just total shit and crap, just like the internet radio ... that was just another corporate attempt to make sure micro radio did not succeed!

We were fortunate in LA, we had stations that delayed the sale out until nearly the 80's and we had KROQ (K_Rock) which was an underground channel until about 75. They went off air and came back as the bastion of Punk and later New Wave, many a band received a lot of airplay and their "Brake" from K-Rock. Frank used to swing by and do his thing including playing what became the album Lather in its interiority live on air while commenting, some of this can be heard on the Album. K-Rock thrived on not being "commercial" and I believe this is why Frank liked their forum, but alas it somewhat stale and eventually became a format that was sold across the nation (this is why there is a K-Rock in almost every major market). They have in recent years returned to being the go to station to find new and exciting music and they still allow bands to walk in and shop their wares.

Not all is lost... :smoke:
