Speaking of Mike Oldfield: I recently revisted Tubular Bells and Hergest Ridge for the first time after nearly 40 years. I had given the vinyl records away a long time ago. My latest interest in those albums came from a review about a Tubular Bells remake because Mike Oldfield wanted to get rid of all those mistakes and imperfections of the original. I never heard the remake(s) but wanted to check out the original once again and found a cheap twofer CD with the most recent remasters of the original Tubular Bells and Hergest Ridge (http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/poprock/detail/-/art/Mike-Oldfield-Tubular-Bells-Hergest-Ridge/hnum/1476816)

IMO the mistakes and imperfections are essential for the charme of those albums. All those nasty notes and rumbling rhythms are mistakes? I never thought so! Those originals are the definite versions.

Ah- I've read about this one but never heard it. As a massive Peter Cook fan and a bit lukewarm on Godley and Creme - is it really worth it for me?

I think so ... however, this is a cryptic, weird, off the wall and strange as anything else, and to catch Peter just rambling on, makes you wonder if this is art for art's sakes, and not because these folks ahd something to say or do.

It is a collector's item, simply because of its complete and total disdain for rock and commercial music, and total devotion to something else, regardless of what it is ... I would almost call this a thinking man's Frank Zappa at 300 1/2 Motels and Woodstock!

There are a lot of albums that deserve the mention ... that do not get the chance to be heard because of the commercial top ten thing that makes most people think that is the only good music and the rest is not as good.

It's an endless list ... music that has not and will never be on radio (excpe once in a blue decade, Nature's Way by Spirit) ... that shows the human spirit and then some ... but folks are too indoctrinated by the commercial and social conditioning with "top ten" that for them to even give a listen to something else ... is a scary proposition, and only someone with the anti-establisment sentiment like Frank Zappa will get their attention for a while. Even worse, is that the majority of folks can not listen to something that is more than 3 or 4 or 5 minutes long ... or a an old friend of mine said after 1 minute of Ozric Tentacles ... where's the lyrics?

In Europe, specially, there is a lot more respect for the artistry behind a lot of these things, and that should be a clue for all folks here for the appreciation of a lot of Frank's music ... and him getting requests for classical work, that he would never do in America, and on top of it will never play his music, since Boston Pops will NEVER consider Frank's music ... !!!

a lot of folks (crimheads included) give this album negative reviews, but i consider it a tour de force, one of my favorite crimson albums.

heard through from start to finish, i find it's impact to be devastating. in a good way.

I always loved Cook's response to criticism of the album. According to Harry Thompson:
