Did anybody else notice that the track "Redneck Eats" (on 200 Motels) contains an early version of what later became "The Black Page"? It struck me as I was listening to it yesterday, but I couldn't find anything about this connection anywhere on the web.

How detailed is your analysis? Zappa wrote a significant amount of music in this vein. For example, there are similarities between sections in Inca Roads and Alien Orifice. It may not be quite accurate to use the word "version" here. They're just significant thematic similarities perhaps?

Zappa based the opening bars on a Tony Williams lick that Bozzio had been playing (apparently) but it's certainly possible he'd written some of it earlier or recycled something. I can hear an inversion of the bassoon melody at the start of The Rite of Spring; the bit that goes.... 'Dahhh... dyada-da-da-daaaaa' is like an upside down version of the melody at the start of The Black Page... 'Dahhh... da-da-dahh-dadaaaaa'.... Seriously!

Actually the Tony Williams reference is in the short improvised drum solo Bozzio plays on ZINY before he starts playing "The Black Page," not in Zappa's composition.

Oh Ok - can you remind me where the quote of him saying that is? Was it on Drum Channel or something?

I can't find it online. And yes, I think either he or the interviewer/editor said this in a way that made it sound like it was in Zappa's composition.
