Two mildly interesting comments on the show from people who (claim they) actually went to it. Culled from the piles of litter on the internet.


From March 9, 1993 -
In `68 or `69 (memory's pretty fuzzy from dem old days) I saw 
Frank at the Kerrisdale Arena (a rather sorry 5000 seat skating 
rink in Vancouver next to my old high school) on his first return 
to Canada after a bad experience in Montreal some years earlier. 
(Perhaps some of my francophone compatriots can recall the details: 
something about being thrown out of a restaurant and being 
generally misunderstood on stage, and I don't think it was just 
a language barrier thing :^) )
Anyway, after a really rollicking version of King Kong featuring 
Frank and two others on drums playing at once, he got a thunderous 
standing ovation, and when the noise died down, he walked to the 
mike and in a voice that seemed mixed with equal amounts of wonder 
and gratitude said "That...that's an unprecedented response to 
the kind of bullshit that we play" Of course, we cheered even louder 
and went home very happy.

Hi Rick, I spent a lot of time at Retinal Circus in the 60's. Was at the July show of Velvet Underground, saw the Doors, Blacksnake Blues Band... those were the days. Actually had a hot night with some girl that was selling chocolate bars to the left of the stage... hah ha.

Do you have any info on the Zappa concert at Kerrisdale Arena? 1966 or 1967? I was there. I believe it was a White Lightening Acid night. Frank adapted "Help I'm A Rock" to "HELP I'm the Mayor"!! (Tom Campbell) Boy, do I have stories about that night. We partied with The "Mothers" at some seaside house out in West Vancouver, actually gave the drummer a ride back to the BlueBoy Hotel at 49th and Southwest Marine.

When I was 12 & 13 years old, I used to play ice hockey games in Kerrisdale Arena. It's not used for concerts any longer but apart from FZ and The Mothers, up until the early '80s, artists like The Clash, Motorhead and Split Enz played here...

FZ, Ray Collins, Roy Estrada, Jimmy Carl Black, Art Tripp, Ian Underwood, Don Preston, Bunk Gardner, Motorhead Sherwood. (Last tour with Ray Collins)

The only show listed for August 68 is uncertain, and gets the following mention:

Date and location for the following recordings are quite uncertain...

I plan on ordering this with a couple of other titles to justify the postage. It's a total but rape though to charge that much to Canada, especially with the wait and being more expensive then any other website.

I doubt these will show up in stores or amazon. Did any of the other Zappa records show up in other locations?

Oh and add me to the list of fans wondering "Would it fucking kill them to list information like source material and a tracklist?" I mean, it would only get people more excited right?

The FZ Gig List sez this show is from August 25, 1968.

And although the Gig List doesn't mention this, I met Jeff Simmons in Vancouver in 1995 and he told me that Easy Chair opened for the Mothers in Seattle and Vancouver in 1968.

If it was possible to order these anywhere other than MusicToday I would do so immediately. Ordering from G&S to Canada is no cheaper either.

I looked there too and my appetite is whetted. I figure she won't issue a setlits for the same reasons she holds back, the fear of bootleggers and the reason this show is going to go out is that it appears never to have been on zappateers.

Or maybe I am wrong, anyway I ordered it.

I dunno, but the ZFT releasing a set list isn't going to make an uncirculated show suddenly appear on Zappateers. If it has never been traded, or is an FZ stage recording or something, then why not just throw up a set list? Doesn't make sense.
