I'm hoping someone here can confirm an incident from my youth.
I was at a Mothers of Invention show in Los Angeles on Mother's Day--1968 or 1969 I believe and probably at the Shrine Auditorium.

My recollection is that Eric Clapton came onstage out of the audience and jammed with Frank and the Mothers for about a half hour. My memory of the incident was that I had no idea who he was until Frank announced him when they were done.

Was anyone else at this show and can you confirm this story?


I apologize if this is a duplicate posting, but I thought I posted it once and it disappeared.

I remember an interview with Frank where he talked about that. And I remember having read about it many times. Can't tell if it is true, though, because I wasn't there ;-).

Isn't Clapton present on WOIIFTM? Maybe he and Zappa hanged around sometimes? I mean, Zappa also played with Claptons Cream colleague Jack Bruce on Apostrophe (').

That's the part I was thinking of! Thanks!

So... it isn't totally impossible that Clapton jammed with Zappa at some occasion.

Well, according to the link, it is true. I would say that we should compile a list of who he jammed or played with, but it's probably already out there somewhere. Dimeola, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Sting, Lennon and Yoko.

Well that link would seem to verify it. I was there but over time my memory of the event has become a bit hazy.
The link provided states 1966 but I could swear it was 1968.

I always thought that voice in "Are You Hung Up" was too American accented to be Clapton, but others online insist it is him. So I don't know.
