As this seems to be aimed at the hardcore "insider" market with all the (supposed) instrumental-geek material, I'd be surprised if this was released as a major-distribution album.

Funny - I have been an FZ fan since 1967 - I have always thought of FZ/MOI as an insider/specialized taste/market. To me this and Road Tapes both seem to be the stuff dreams are made of.

Can't say, but Idiot Bastard posted the original, and he's been pretty accurate. Maybe an e-mail somewhere?

There is no mention of UME, in the context of this alleged release, on his news page and he certainly hasn't mentioned them here in this regard ...

Hey, Idiot Bastard, any comments?

Well, the 'rumour' started here - from "the Barfies" theyselfs.

It's interesting that we were able to pre-order Understanding America before there was any mention at Zappa.com - and even now, as I type, there's no track listing there for either that album or Road Tapes. This seems to be the way the ZFT wants to operate at the minute. Most peculiar as, in the case of UA, they clearly would have lost sales.

But then again, this lack of info is nothing new. Take, for example, the Zappa At The Roundhouse event. Announced by me here at the Forum on 2 July 2010; first mentioned at Zappa.com on 27 October 2010.

If anyone has any doubts about my first post here regarding Finer Moments, then they must believe that I have been the victim of an incredibly elaborate hoax.

For what it's worth, I think the cover is great - and the music (if that's what it turns out to be) sounds like it'll be yet another wondrous release from the ZFT.

Just rejoice!

Yow, there it was. Now it retaliates that noone is ever reading these cryptic meanderings all the way down to the bitter end.

Thanks for the reminder, I'd forgotten about that article. None the less, I thought I had to point out that whatever anyone else was saying, you weren't saying that it was a UME thing. So, we're on the same page: ZFT has mentioned it, in passing, but no hint as to how it will be released.

The thing that's starting to piss me off is that the distinction between FZ's catalogue, being reissued via UME and ZFT's catalogue is becoming blurred. I get that some of the posthumous releases should be core FZ catalogue because he produced them, such as CP3, Lost Episodes, Have I Offended Someone? but Läther was cobbled together by the ZFT, I'm not sure that fits in there in the same way. And as a remaster? Why would they bother? On the other hand, this Finer Moments thing, if it is what the rumours indicate, then I'm Pavlov's dog all over it.

200 Motels really does have to be in there somehow. Don't get me wrong, I don't blame the ZFT for that (or anything really, I don't have any real beef with them except for how confusing things seem to get sometimes and Barfko's postage charges ...) It seems to me that if the ZFT could easily get their hands on 200 Motels, why wouldn't they? So I blame that squarely on the asshole nature of the music business.

[... my bad ...]

I guess it's a difficult one to glam up to acceptable standards, sonically. Maybe they want to go back to the original multitracks, and also release a 5.1 version (for Audio DVD or the movie itself)

Hey IDIOT BASTARD:

I ordered the "Zappa At The Roundhouse" cd and gave it a listen
I wasn't sure what to expect since zappa's orchestral writing is so complex
and challenging but the overall performances were pretty good!
There was something missing I thought...
It was the personality. It seemed the pieces were played quite "straight"
with little to no "eyebrows" as Zappa would say.
the pieces were also "arranged" for this performance so things may have been different.
Great sound quality however!

Pretty enjoyable disc and thanks to your mention of it I never wold have known!

Spot-on 'review'! And yes, another example of something you won't find at 'The Real FZ' site, yet "recorded by kind permission of Gail Zappa". Most odd.

Sincere apologies. I ran out of time and got sloppy, I really should have held off and come back to finish that post properly. I had also mentioned FZ Plays The Music Of FZ and then deleted that and hence why Dweezil's name came into it, I meant to substitute ZFT for his name in that sentence. I realise that even with FZPTMOFZ, even though Dweezil is listed as producer, there were many others involved and working their butts off, including yourself, as always. And I realise that "cobbled" was a bad choice of word. I'm very glad for my current ZFT production of Läther.

My point is that, even though we all know what the original significance of Läther was, some people got to record the exact original in its entirety over the airwaves, the ZFT production that eventually appeared 3 years after he died was not a project of FZ's making. The liner notes say for example "... decisions had to be made. This process shall remain a UMRK secret ... historical relevance and favortism ...". I'm just saying that I believe there should be a clear separation between remasters of FZ albums he put together himself and ZFT productions.

Also, the 2012 Läther may be on Amazon but there is no accompanying information. Is it part of the UME deal or a rerelease direct from Zappa Records? I understand, with the Ryko thing now defunct, that it would be ideal to have an outlet for all the albums previously being delivered by them and that includes Läther, but what is this new one?

(1) Just the Ryko one rereleased?
(2) The Ryko one remastered? Why would you bother?
(3) FZ's original vinyl master retransferred in it's entirety? Now that would be something, I guess.

Again, my sincere apologies for offending you, it was truly careless.

On the case of Läther; did they finally bother to list the entire cast and crew? We know Terry Bozzio was never credited for his work on it, and according to FZ in the 23 Apr 1975 lecture there are 20 people on the performance.
Quote:
FZ Well some of you might have seen a performance that fell to form in 1972, when I was in there with a 20-piece group and we played a piece called The Adventures Of Greggery Peccary, played a couple of movements from that, and I finally have recorded that, like last December, went in and got a 20-piece group together, and laid that down, did a complete version of it, it's possible that that may be released in November.

[/off-topic]

Carry on!

And again the vaultmeister comes in with some passive aggressive self pity. Why not either a) Ignore this board, or b) provide some relevant information?

The attitude (like the infamous "good to know" "threat") is not making me look forward to the next ZPZ show. I will watch the drummer thinking: "Oh that's the guy who puts down anybody on the forum not being like Gary Titone."

Uhm, did I mention I love the vaultmeister? I had some very serious objections regarding the HO mix (I'm sure you never noticed  ), he heartfeltly disagreed, I disagreed some more etc., but he's been handling my juvenile aggressiveness in a polite and laid-back manner all of the time.

And also, even if the Finer Morments album is turning out only half as good as I'm expecting it to, he most likely pulled off Album-of-the-Year 2012. For me, anyway. Kudos!
And, just as an afterthought, maybe he should start and draw the album covers himself, ballpoint on notebook paper, that'd be cool! Sorta like the Buckethead box.

Buckethead Vs the Vaultmeister?

Bucket wins every time. Besides, could you imagine gz letting him get away with something like the Happy Holidays from Buckethead drawings on an official release?

This is a UMe release, coming on 12/18. Appears to be a live record from '73 left in the vault as Frank intended (a prequel to the You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore series) Lather is also coming from UMe the same day. Best Buy will have these in their better stores and on bestbuy.com.
