Samla was later a part of the RIO-movement, with Henry Cow, Univers Zero and Stormy Six, but renamed Zamla Mammaz Manna (probably a parody of the stupid z-instead-of-s-names of the bands in the swedish "dance band" scene, with groups like Fernandoz, Lasse Stefanz and Matz Blahds. Their use of mellotron however, is on the earlier albums like Måltid and Snorungarnas symfoni. And you got to admit, they must be influenced by Uncle Meat-era Zappa a lot. :)

Have you listened to Anekdoten? A little heavier, King Crimson Red-era influenced. I love the mellotron line in this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64rASUL9eGQ

Good to see another Zappaphile who loves RIO music. Henry Cow and Univers Zero are both favorites of mine, but I admit to having never heard Stormy Six ... the 5 disc box set is on my Christmas list. The only Samla album I have is Maltid, which is a truly great record, I think. I suggest, if you haven't, you pick up the Romantic Warriors II DVD on Rock in Opposition, in which Chris Cutler and others talk extensively about Zappa's influence on the RIO scene. Thanks for the Anekdoten tune ... I've been meaning to check them out. Thanks very much.

Just got the new Dinosaur Jr. CD "I Bet On Sky" today. Opening track has mellotron
Very good album, a couple clunkers but overall an 8/10. Nice trilogy now - Beyond/Farm/I Bet On Sky.

I bet most of the Zappaphiles would love the RIO movement. Stormy Six is really good, especially the album L'Apprendista - a classic (influenced by Gentle Giant)! If you love Måltid, then also check out Klossa Knapitatet and Snorungarnas symfoni. And the Zamla Mammaz Manna-albums Schlagerns mystik/För äldre nybegynnare (very Zappaesque!) and Familjesprickor (very dark) are also awesome!

I'll check out Romantic Warriors II, thanks! :)

I love the Mellotron in 'Sailors Tale'...very subtle

I bought one of the white Mellotrons once, and restored the rubbers on it which had gone shiney
It had a spare rack of tapes as well, it was a cool instrument, but a roadies nightmare
I sold it to one of the local prog revival bands in the 90's

I also saw one of the original Mellotrons sell at auction with a pile of junk for $10
I didn't realise it at the time, it was the version with the big divider in the middle of the keyboard
Probably the same as the Abbey Rd one...and probably the only one in Australia

here's a good page outlining the Mellotron history

I've got a friend who restores mellotrons. He's actually got the one that Justin Hayward used on Days of Future Passed, as well as their other early albums.

http://www.planetmellotron.com/albums.htm All the albums with mellotron on them. No Zappa nor The Mothers of Invention.

All of the guitar parts on the Kinks "Phenomenal Cat" were performed on the Mellotron Mark II. And the flutes too, obviously. Very cool!
