Didn't buy a ticket this time around. Should've...I guess I didn't desire 350 million dollars enough...or whatever the final jackpot was. I have better luck at video *SPAM* at one of the local casino's whenever I feel like blowing money on one of the area Indian reservations.

I did and I gave it all to Obama, he needed the help I heard he was going to get a reverse *SPAM* on the whitehouse to make ends meet. I didn't want that.

Is it possible to purchase several licences ?
I mean ... as the powerball winner, I could purchase all of'em and obtain a monopoly.
Then I would be the only one to be able to listen to the long awaited Holy Grail
I am the devil
(maybe I need to read again the licence agreement, and the ZFT might not let me do so :smurf: )

Powerball jackpot still rising, reaches $1.5 billion

A national fever over the Powerball lottery rose higher Tuesday as officials confirmed that the historic jackpot had reached a staggering $1.5 billion.

Despite the astronomically long odds of actually winning the grand prize -- Powerball officials say the chances are one in 292.2 million -- dreamy-eyed gamblers continued to snap up tickets in the 44 states and three territories that allow sales.

In the three days since the last drawing failed to produce a winner, the jackpot has grown by more than $500 million.

Drawings are held every Saturday and Wednesday at 7:59 p.m. PST, and this next drawing will mark the 19th consecutive one.

How much is one combination? If it's less than $5.13 and you already have a huge amount of money you could buy all the tickets and make a significant profit.

It ceases to be a lottery then.

It has been done before. It becomes viable as soon as the jackpot exceeds the product of the number of tickets and the individual ticket price. I studied examples like these during a maths course not so long ago. It occurs to me to be a very risky investment because if you don't get in really early the chance increases that an individual ticket you haven't bought could win. Plus I think there may now be rules against doing it anyway.

the powerball game consists of six numbers. Each of five white balls drawn range from 1 to 59; a red ball ranges from 1 to 35.) There are 175.2 million combinations so, at $2 a play, you'll need to get to an ATM or your mattress and withdraw a little over $350 million to cover all possible draws.

@bracton. That seems reasonable, I haven't done the calculation in a spreadsheet myself as yet. And if you bought all possible combinations at a cost of $350 million with a jackpot of $1.5 billion that's a profit of $1.15 billion. That was pretty much the idea that was mentioned during an applied probability course I did in 2014.

But wait there's more.

Not only do you need the cash to cover the spending, but you must also overcome the problem of the mechanics of purchasing millions of dollars of tickets.
One machine spitting out tickets would take a long time.
The multi-millionaire would probably hire (and pay) numerous people to purchase from various locations. If you were to print a ticket a second nonstop 24 hours a day from just one machine it may take you an entire year to run all the combinations. Roughly 31 million seconds in a year give or take. Odds of winning the billion + are 1 in 292 million. Providing all the people are honest and are not stealing a ticket here or there from you and claiming as their own. Well, anyone who has $350 million dollars to begin with has already won the game without purchasing a ticket. A game of chance is not to be conflated with investment. Just as risk and gamble are two differing terms.

@Milton I wasn't seriously suggesting anyone try. This was presented as an idea by the lecturer in an applied probability course I took recently. It was probably applied a long time ago in a much smaller scenario, I don't remember the details.

I'm sure you're aware that a lot of current difficulties in the world are caused by certain greedy bastards who have way more than $350 million dollars, that still want more and object to any kind of social responsibility via paying tax or anything else that might prevent them getting richer and richer and richer ...

Obviously, but there are exceptions. There are popular games of chance that casinos can't afford to get rid of, that are very favourable for people with certain talents, who in the past had often been employed by certain individuals with money to "invest" that did very nicely from it until casinos got more ruthless at shutting these people down.

Of course, even if one were able to purchase every possible combination, there's the risk of having to split the pot several ways with multiple winners.
