What are the strangest reasons you heard from people for not liking Zappa and his music?
For me the strangest was: "There is too much xylophone in the music!"

I think for most people they can't stomach the tuplets and / or the uncommon time signatures.

I once played the guitar solo for Keep It Greasy for my cousin and asked him to tap his foot to the beat. I did it as a joke just to see the look on his face when he couldn't figure out what was going on.

"Where's the vocals?"

My friend Nick in 1979 at my house while Joe's Garage played in the background, "This is terrible"

My cuz Ralph in 1997 in my car with Yo Mama vocals returning after guitar solo, "This is still the same song!!?"

My friend Jim's brother at a party at his house in 1979 when I put on Be Bop Tango, "NO ZAPPA!"

My mother in 1981, at home after the line "boogied all night in a cheesy bar" just played from YPWWIH, "(laughter.....laughter)"

My friend Billy at Baby Snakes movie in NYC 1979/80, right after Beefheart and the doll, "Let's get outta here!"

My aunt Terri (Zep fan) 1980's listening to (I can't remember the song right now), "All Zappa's shit sounds the same!"
My Aunt Terri again, 1980's, listening to City of Tiny Lights from SY, "this sucks!"

I played Roxy & Elsewhere to a bunch of folks I hoped would dig the groove and funkiness inherent on that record. So imagine my disappointment when one of them confronted me: "This is not uptempo enough for my taste". His idea of uptempo music? Robert Miles or whatever kind of 4/4 club/dance shit. Meh. Too bad some generic computerised beats float many people's boats better than the powerful drum tandem of Humphrey + Thompson.

...I think it was Yo Mama that was on cassette in the car, when my father pulled his foot of the gas pedal and asked "what's that I'm hearing?" It turned out it was on the album.

A friend of mine once said Frank was an asshole. Many people don't like tuned percussion.

A friend once told me he does not care for Zappa because he is laughing at peple, and insulting them, rather than laughing with them.

"Me-he-he-he-he -- This one's got reverb added to it. I want a ZFT record that sounds like the tape was found on the coal cellar floor with inches of dust crusting all of the oxide, because this is what makes music AU-THEN-TIC"

A friend once told me (about 30 years ago) "Zappa thinks he's smarter than everybody else". My reply was "Well, he probably is".

"His music sounds like it's from Wile E. Coyote & Road Runner cartoons." ~ 2010, some jerk-off on another message board

"His classical music is unlistenable." ~ 2010, similar jerk-off on another message board

"Zappa is pure cult status shit. He is to music what Bruce fucking Campbell is to acting." ~ 2010, another similar jerk-off on another message board

"It's just druggie music"

Another time I played the Gumbo Variations in the kitchen that I used to work in and thought that it would blow people away (I was only 18) but people thought it was absolute shit. The head chef said that the bloke should learn how to plat the sax properly.
He was the same person that turned off Stone Free by Hendrix when I put it on saying "It's just 60's hippie shit"

This is absolutely off-topic, but that reminds me so much of the faces of a bunch of Richard-Marx-enchanted girls in a French class that I attended in ca. 1992, when I played them 'Hymn of the 7th Galaxy.' (And how right they were -- Damn Scientology crap - little did I know...

Back when I was about 22, I played the LSO version of "Bogus Pomp" for a music major that I worked with. He complained that it sounded like a whole bunch of musical clichés pasted together.

What I should have told him was: a. "Yeah. That was the point." and b. "Isn't it hilarious?"

ain' t that a compliment?

By the way: why asking for reasons, why people don't like FZs music when even people, who call themselve fans, feel tortured by FZ himself with so-called torture tracks?

Zappa himself must had not considered it strange if people hated his music: he did state that musicians are generally considered as "scum of the earth". Zappa may have been more intelligent, more witty/sarcastic than other scums of the earth, but it is inescapable that he would be considered, not only a scum of the earth, but the scummiest of the scum of the earth.

A girl i met a year ago (who listens to all manner of off the wall stuff) said i don't like it because i can't listen to half hour pieces without any vocals, so i started sending her little bits and pieces of songs with vocals and she started loving it :-) we are dating now (not gonna let a Zappa female fan get away) and she loves him, her favorite track is dumb all over.. she even likes the longer instrumental tracks now as well...

Because they had different musical tastes than me. Good god, that's inexcusable!
