Seriously, let's not beat around the bush, the join up process here is a fucking joke. I've joined other forums with very strict rules and their join up procedures have generally been very transparent. It's not rocket science.

Yes, it's become much harder to join this forum. Judging by the time on the mails he sent me, the moderator spent about four minutes on Saturday approving a few of my posts. There are still a number of posts that he hasn't looked at since I joined up on Thursday. And when I wanted to edit one for typos, that post suddenly disappeared again. This didn't happen three years ago. Future members of this forum will have to be very patient people... Luckily, patience is (sometimes) one of my virtues... The good thing is that this procedure probably prevents some spammers, although we have seen some from time to time. How they manage to come through is beyond me.

The fact is that it has made it harder for new people while not making it harder for spammers.

The moderators only check posts for the main forums. Posts to "Activation", "Zappa Forum Announcements" and "Frequently Asked Questions" go straight through. Which is important, because it's the only way new members can ask questions while they wait for full enrolment. Even if they only allowed posts in the "Activation" thread, the nastier spammers can just flood that. The point is that they all show up in the "View new posts" list.

Their current system is crap, there are no two ways about it. They need to get some advice from other forums who have found successful ways of dealing with this. It's not rocket science.

A short summary --

I joined last Thursday, and have made some posts in the FAQ subforum that come up immediately. The moderator has approved four posts/topics elsewhere. One post/topic disappeared when I edited it to correct typos. 3 or 4 posts from last week are still in limbo - about Yoko Ono, Trout Mask Replica and Waters/Gilmour. It'll be interesting to see if they suddenly appear when I reach the 10 post limit, but I doubt it. The moderator will probably have to approve them manually. So far I have seen him at work for 4 minutes last Saturday. As I said - future members will have to be very patient people, indeed. It'll be interesting to see how that influences the climate of the forum.

One week and many unpublished posts since I joined, my guess is that THEY DON'T REALLY WANT NEW MEMBERS on this forum.

It's not that easy, actually - on the other subforums I still get the message that the moderator has to approve. And he hasn't approved any of my posts since Saturday... Hence this stupid chronicle of the membership process. Thanks anyway, BBP!

Dark Clothes used to fit me, but the name's just an invention. When the persona seems too fixed, I feel the need to move on. I as a person outside the forum am not reinventing myself, but wanted to create a persona more in tune with how I feel. A less serious, more flippant commentator perhaps. In addition to that, the old DC had to break an understood alliance with a certain poster, and this was the final impetus to change. But I keep the old moniker at zappateers, and feel comfortable with the difference.

Well, this is fun. I'll try to be patient. I'd like to post once in a while, but I usually only want to post if I have something relevant to add so it could take a while to get to 10. In the meantime my posts could very well be irrelevant by the time they're approved...
