I haven't been on here in ages, but I'm completely obsessed with this live video of the Keneally song Skull Bubbles and trying to figure out how best to have this spread as far and wide as possible. Check this out and tell me this isn't one of the greatest live performances of a song you've ever seen!

Sure. No problem.
The actual song itself was pretty bland. The guitar solo must be what you're obsessing over. Not even close to being the greatest anything anywhere. The 12 notes at his disposal are not all utilized but the ones he uses go by in a flurry. Hard to be melodic when you're flying through the scales as fast as you can. Same notes over and over in a seemingly random order, up and down the fret board. Nothing terribly inventive. Good tone, of course, which helped make it less boring. Flashy blues ,really. I think you've oversold this. My first real taste of Keneally and I probably wont be back for seconds. Looks like he's into what he's doing, though. That's all that really matters.

Keneally is fun. Check out his Bakin' at the Potato album for some melodic/frenetic/magnetic/diabetic/rhapsodic & diabolic finger stylings. Singing too

downer mydnyte,
Keneally is indeed excellent, and this is coming from someone who thinks Vai's solo stuff sucks. I'd suggest you check out more than Skull Bubbles. Look up Uglytown from the "Guitar Therapy" DVD. That's probably my favorite track of his.

MK does a lot more than just flashy shredding, very diverse. All of his albums are great to beyond great. Wooden Smoke, Boil That Dust Speck, and dog. are good ones to start with. I can't wait for the CD/DVD reissue of Sluggo! which should be out this year.

Cool. Glad you dug it. I think I'll pop that live disc in right now. :smoke: That song is originally from his first album "hat." which rules too.

About Skull Bubbles, I like the song, and the album is OK, but for some reason that album "Dancing" is my least favorite of MKs, hard to wrap my head around it. Kedgeree kicks ass, but the rest didn't totally click for me, which is my fault. I do like the instrumentation though, w/ the horns and vibes. I should give it a thorough listen again soon.

Fred, Dancing is definitely Keneally's poppier side, but frankly I think he excells at writing quirky prog-pop. Right now, and I don't have all his albums yet, but Dancing really hit me hard, I truly connected with so many of the songs on that album. About Skull Bubbles, yes I think the solo is fantastic, but not because of lots of notes or anything like the downer is talking about, there is an emotion being portrayed in this song, the lyrics are simplistic, but speak about wild up and down emotions that I can really relate, and that fantastic riff speaks so deeply to me of that exuberance trying to get out through all the stress and shit of life.

I have Hat, and yes it is fantastic as well, and just like vai's first album, is really Keneally still deep in the throes of wanting to be Frank. Fantastic stuff!

Thanks for sharing, this is probably the best video I have seen of Mike Keneally playing solo.
Now I have to confess that, despite the talent of this musician, I still do not understand what is so great about him.
I just cannot get into it ... sorry guys.
