As a fan of the "surf rock" genre, I was surprised to see (and hear) that Frank Zappa got his start producing surf records in the "Cucamonga Years".
I figured that he would've found surf rock boring and gimmicky (He refers to it as "a bit of nostalgia for the old folks" on Lumpy Gravy).
Anyone know what he thought of the genre itself? Was he merely producing it because it was popular and he needed work?
I suspect you are largely right. He was a young musician with a studio who wanted to make inroads in the music industry and sell some "product". Who knows, he may have actually liked it. He seemed to have an affinity for most forms of popular music in one way or another (if only mockingly in many cases). I also happen to really like surf music and really enjoy that early Studio Z and Pal stuff.
I agree,he seems to be having fun, fun, fun,on the both sides of the Ned and Nelda record with Ray Collins. It's music,Frank liked it or could mimic it really good if and when he wanted. What a guy!
