100 years ago today, the Piltdown man, an aledged "missing link" in human evolution, was oficially presented at the prestigious Geological Society of London...

It turned out to be one of the most prominent scientific fraud acts ever caught (use the euphemism hoax if you will). Despite some early skeptics, the fraud went unexposed for some 40 years.

The Piltdown materials were stained to make them look old

Today is the end of the long count Mayan calendar. You can take it as a sort of not local, not national, but a cosmik holiday...

...and of course. Today is the end of Zappadam...

I met a person tonight that lived next to Moon Unit and her family when he was 9.....more later.

60 years ago in The Netherlands, high spring tide and a severe storm combined to cause the North Sea Flood of 1953. It would take 1836 lives, primarily in the south-west of The Netherlands. Eventually it would lead to the Delta Works, a massive collection of dams and sluices to protect the country from the sea.

Japan marks 68th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki

The US dropped two atomic bombs, three days apart, in Japan.

This year's ceremony takes place as operators of the Fukushima nuclear power plant struggle to contain radioactive water leaking into the ocean.

The revelations about the continuing fallout from the disaster have highlighted concerns about the safety of nuclear energy, and the effects of radiation.

Grainne Harrington reports.

50 years ago today:

1963 – During a large political rally in Washington, D.C., Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, describing his desire for a future where blacks and whites would coexist harmoniously as equals.

Martin Luther King: 'I have a dream' revisited
To mark the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King's I Have a Dream speech, BBC Radio 4 asked notable figures to record a recital of the celebrated text.

40 years ago, Overnite Sensation was released.
We asked the person who painted the cover to explain what it all means.
But, he didn't really know, either...
