Jeff "Skunk" Baxter was pretty good on slide for Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers in the early to mid 70s.

'Pearl of the Quarter' is an example...

It's pedal steel, but I've always liked this clip, watch this girly go!
I've never heard Barbara Mandrell sing, but she's an ace picker!

I like the lap steel on the ol' Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys tunes
The guy playing lap with Hank III is no slouch either

Johnny Winter's first album.

Or, better yet, anything by Derek Trucks. He's a monster on slide.

Great choices from the '60s/'70s, but the greatest of the last 20 yrs is Duane Denison(The Jesus Lizard/Tomahawk/Th' Legendary Shack Shakers)

Ry Cooder is one of the best steel guitar player, imo. He's my favourite on steel guitar.

Check the soundtrack of Paris, Texas movie by Wim Wenders (1984)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6ymVaq3Fqk

This is quite famous I think.

However, all Ry's discography is full of steel guitar.
