So I'm having a tough time trying to learn to play this song on guitar. I'm trying to play the fast version from Lumpy Gravy, but the only tabs I can find online are for the Money version.
http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/f/frank ... lo_tab.htm

So I went ahead and learned the tab for the Money version but then I found that if I play the same tab, but down a whole string, it ALMOST sounds like the Lumpy Gravy version. I'm just learning music, so bear with me, but it sounds like the recorded version is out of tune or something. Was the guitar on this track recorded and then played back at a different speed or something? I just can't get in tune with it. Hopefully I'm at least making sense. Any guitar geeks out there want to give me a tip on how to play this awesome song? Thanks in advance.

Without listening to the different versions, I might offer that he may have transposed the tune down a half octave. If you know what the melody sounds like in your head and you've got some accurate tabs you should be ok. Then if you want to transpose it yourself (up or down) then that should be fairly easy.

The version on Lumpy Gravy is sped up, listen to the percussion and the "la la la la la la laaaa" voices

Yeah, it seems sped up on LG a bit so it's sorta "between keys." I play it starting with the B on the 2nd fret of the A string. That will either help you or totally mess you up! :)

It's a fun song to play.

Looks like this song was in several different keys throughout Zappa's career.

1961 version (collected on The Lost Episodes) is in B-flat
1967 WOIIFTM version is in G, the Lumpy Gravy version appears in D (but may be sped up from C)
Subsequent versions are in the key of C (1975-76 tour version, the 1978 version with Shankar on violin).

Tune up to the Lumpy Gravy version. You can still look at the tabs from WOIIFTM. Just play the notes in the correct spot on the neck to match Lumpy Gravy.

I adore this version. Very sophisticated writing and arrangement from a young Uncle Frankie and it is a unique entry in the whole cannon.

try 'I'm so happy I could cry', same tune, different lyrics, stripped down arrangement, slower pace, original mothers on Joe's Corsage

And in G, just like the WOIIFTM incarnation, forgot about that one.

This version is one of my new favorites. When I first heard it, I was shocked at how well it worked as a straight ahead jazz tune.
