I think this is potentially the most beautiful composition in Zappa's repetoire. I always turn to it when I need to get happy.

I also think "I Promise Not to Cum in Your Mouth" is one of his most beautiful.
Also "Alien Orifices" is drop dead gorgeous!

It is up there for me, but in particular the studio version that appeared on Weasel's.

Edit, oh yes and the instrumental version from Lumpy

This is no three chord knock off, this is no mere swoon, it's a great song. It may have started life as an instrumental but as a song it came into its own. Zappa put the word song back on the table as a serious form for any composer worth his salt to attempt. I love playing and singing this thing. It was a big step in my education.

You're totally right about "I Promise Not to Cum in Your Mouth." For such a profane name (which is equally as awesome) it's really just so dreamy, and sophisticated too actually. Great song!

the thing I like about this song is,, (from Weasels), Ray croons it up like a Dean Martin or somebody, and Frank's lyrics kick the shit out of it,,,,

Haha, exactly. It's like, they contradict each other in a sense.

I'm sure DZ understands this very well, how do you think he came to understand his dads compositions?

:?

Okay I decided "What's New in Baltimore?" from Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention is definitely in the running of most gorgeous song ever.

Ruth Underwood certainly agrees it's a beautiful song.

And yeah, it's interesting how you can construct a different phrase out of the first phrase just by changing the rhythms of the notes! Sometimes FZ could exhibit real cleverness of making the most out of a limited amount of notes, whilst his usual wont was complexity splattering all over the page. However, no doubt he did most of the time have a method to his madness.

Another take on it:

"Talking about music is like dancing about architecture" (or something along these lines) - Frank Zappa [?] Evils Costello?
