I was about to launch into a whinge about having spoken too soon, but I decided to make a call first. It was supposed to be released in Adelaide on Jun 7th but stock didn't turn up on that day. I checked yesterday and they still didn't have it but I've just now been informed they have one and I've put it on hold.

I picked this up last night.

The performances are mind-numbingly brilliant, especially Inca Roads (George Duke is a MOTHERFUCKER!), Pygmy Twylyte and Montana, which includes one of FZ's best live solos from this song I've heard thus far. The interplay between band members is hilarious and just entertaining as all hell. Like most of them, even Frank is all over the stage when he isn't playing guitar (and sometimes even when he is!).

The Mike Douglas Show bonus material comprising a performance of a quaintly subdued version of Black Napkins w/ the house band and bookended interview is cool. And I like how Douglas asks FZ mostly better than average questions.

The sound quality is stellar. The picture quality, while relatively good overall, is more than a little grainy in parts of some songs. Though, considering the nearly 40 year age of the special, it's to be expected. And it's really not that big of a deal to me.

This is ESSENTIAL viewing/hearing for Zappa fans.

Nice review DB. I like it when FZ is happy and playin' around, those are the most enjoyable ones to watch for me. 8)
I've seen FZ & Mothers when he wasn't as happy as he's been at other times. Perfect show. All the right notes. Lackluster vibes man. That concert I don't think Ruth took her eye's off FZ once, except for her instruments.

I never bought DRS. I've only "borrowed" it for a real long time from a friend who didn't really like FZ until recently....bummer for me, finally good for him. Anyways with the Mike Douglas extra clips this would be the one to buy first, to add to my ...ahem...collection..... So some people don't want their Frank back. I'll take it! Anyone of you would too and most likely have a borrowed copy or two in your "official collections". Am I right?!? Ok, I feel better. I was feeling guilty about that one and a little bummed too at having to buy both. I do think this is a better fit for me right now. Not that it makes a heck of a lot of difference anyway. Ya know?

All right Poly! Now I gotta get it, if it's selling out in Adelaide, it must be ggggreat!

No.

Too bad. That wonderful version of Inca Roads is ruined by the claymation.

Go to the extras page
Use the left and right buttons on your remote to scroll
Eventually Frank's mustache will light up
View an Easter Egg that isn't footage from the show.

Without asking what the Easter Egg is and killing the surprise, I'll try that later tonight and see for myself...

Thanks.

Make sure you sit back, put up your feet, and have a beer. It's well worth the effort!

I just called up my local record guy and he's sold out the last two copies* and I'll have to wait until Monday for mine to arrive on my screen... Please, don't spoil the surprise. Thanks y'all!

* The way I/he/we look at it is, the more people that buy, listen & watch any Frank Zappa product is better than me having to wait a day and 1/2 for mine. I hope he gets more FZ business too. 8) :D

No matter how you tossed the dice, it had to be.

So, earlier this morning after discovering the scintillating surprise, I must confess that I never knew a ticket stub (albeit a black & white one) could produce such extraordinarily breathtaking results.

Video quality sucks compared to Dub Room. Why is it dark and grainy?

Dark? I don't think so. Grainy? maybe, but it was filmed for TV, and the tapes are almost 40 years old now. I think the DVD looks fine.

But still you can say darker and darker. I don't know what the outside of this thing looks like at all.

I especially loved the use of a miked Pignose ampli at the Mike Douglas Show
And great tone again...

ps,
I am blasphemous if I say that in one point or two I suspect a little marimba overdubbing?
Ruth is not playing, while you can hear a little flurry of notes...

Could just be an audio-video mismatch. Can you point to a specific time?

This is probably the best Zappa video ever, at least my instant favourite. All the others have their boring moments - including Baby Snakes and 200 Motels - A Token Of His Extreme is all climactic action. I love the way the Mike Douglas band backs up Black Napkins, with the horns playing the theme along with the guitar towards the end. I would think Zappa spent a couple of hours rehearsing them to get it right. On the KCET show itself, Florentine Pogen stands out as the best recorded version of that song - it really gains from stretching out. I've always felt that the OSFA version doesn't really take off - this one certainly does. Even my wife quite enjoyed it, although she didn't like the super rapid cutting. I don't mind, it's so obviously a part of Zappa's vision. And the claymation! Will we ever see the complete Bruce Bickford Greggery Peccary? The inside of the DVD cover gives yet another glimpse of that seemingly aborted project - you know - "meanwhile, the enraged HUNCHMEN (and HUNCHWOMEN) rumble through the SHORT FOREST until (realizing the little swine has escaped) they decide to park their steaming vehicles in a circular pseudo-Wagon Train formation. . . and have a LOVE-IN!" Anyways, a great show and a great package - if you're a Zappa fan, you need it! And you don't even have to ask why!

Just watched it this morning. I loved it except for the fact that the first track skips, so straight to Montana. Great time seeing the missing bits from Dub Room and the Mike Douglas Show.
