Dropped by Grimey's while waiting on my daughter at a downtown appt.

disc 1 (tIMF) now playing!
$7.86US
I'll trade in my remaster tIMF, BoF, and VotEB on my next visit. (I thought I'd made a bad choice when I saw that the new MO box set was out (and already OOP) but it only has the first three albums).

I've got a MO box set of remasters on its way from Amazon, for abou £12. It's got the first 3, plus a live album, plus the Trident sessions, all remastered...I think....

Actually first 2 albums, the live double, and Trident.

Quilt, let me know how the MO box sounds. This new one is a little lacking. The 1998 remaster of IMF sound better than the one in this 2007 box. Que sera, sera.

Yesterday, went to McKay's

In the '80s, I subscribed to the Time-Life Sounds of the Seventies, 60s Rock and 50s and Rock and roll series I must have 100 of them, giving me a pretty complete listing of what was on the radio at the time. They were tremendous collections...

I guess I can say I bought this, as I paid for it with my own blood, as I gave a pint at the Red Cross today, and WRLT was there promoting, so I got a tire gauge and this CD, sealed and month before release. (I deferred to this and release the new Proclaimers, who the next guy in line wanted.

Bass – Clive Chapman*, David Hungate, Wilbur Bascomb
Conductor – Gavyn Wright, Harry Bluestone
Drums – Bernard Purdie, David Dowell, Jeff Porcaro
Engineer – Geoff Emerick
Guitar – Freddie Tackett*, Jeff Beck, Larry Carlton, Peter Frampton, Ray Russell, Ricky Hitchcock, Robert Ahwai
Harmonica – Tommy Reilly
Horns – Tower Of Power
Keyboards – David Paich, Max Middleton
Percussion – Ray Cooper, Victor Feldman
Producer, Keyboards – George Martin
Synthesizer [Moog] – Francis Monkman

The opening track is a big improvement on The Beatles version. High vocal harmonies with a solid disco back beat and lush orchestration that George Martin could only dream about back in the primitive 4 track days of 1967.

With A Little Help From My Friends by Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees: This is how this song should have been done. Ringo Starr only hinted at the glory this lead vocal achieves.

Sandy Farina- Here Comes The Sun: This song is filler. It was filler on Abby Road and it is filler here.

Peter Frampton / Bee GeesGetting Better : This track is getting better now that Peter Frampton has rescued it from psychedelic oblivion and given it an updated late 70s sound. Producer George Martin improves his lightweight production from 1967 with some real, heavy duty roller skating grooves. A highlight of this incredible album.

Dianne Steinberg / StargardLucy In The Sky With Diamonds : Stargard should have been one of the biggest acts of the 70s. When the executive producer of the movie slept with each member of this female vocal group, that is what he promised them. If only the public felt what he felt. "Lucy And The Diamonds" are the fictitious vocal group in the film. And some people thought this was a drug song!

Bee Gees / Dianne Steinberg / Paul Nicholas / Donald Pleasence / StargardI Wan't You (She's So Heavy) : The presence of Donald Pleasence (Halloween, Halloween 2, Halloween 5) ensures a top quality performance of this originally lackluster Beatles song. Move over Yoko, Stargard is here!

Paul Nicholas / Peter Frampton / Bee Gees Good Morning, Good Morning: John Lennon never envisioned such an incredible arrangement of his filler song from The Beatles version of Sgt Pepper. While the 1967 album was over produced and lacking slick production, this album, as exemplified in this track, is good enough to rival the music of any Charlie's Angels episode.

Bee Gees / Jay MacIntosh / John Wheeler She's Leaving Home: What ever happened to Jay MacIntosh? What a talent! He manages to make Paul McCartney sound dated and flat.

Paul Nicholas / Dianne SteinbergYou Never Give Me Your Money :Give your money to Diane Steinberg! She needs it.

Robin GibbOh! Darling : Robin Gibb and George Martin = Pure Gold!!

Steve MartinMaxwell's Silver Hammer : Steve Martin's funniest bit ever.

Bee GeesPolythene Pam: The Bee Gees know how to improve on a weak filler track. Why listen to Abby Road again when you've got this?

Peter Frampton / Bee GeesShe Came In Through The Bathroom Window : Joe Cocker turned it into an epic track. Frampton and the BGs turn it back into filler. The lyrics make no sense and that's part of it's charm.

Bee GeesNowhere Man : John Lennon should have taken vocal lessons from Maurice Gibb. Sublime!!

Earth, Wind & FireGot To Get You Into My Life : Back in 1966 Paul McCartney had never heard of funk. EW&F straightened him out in 1978 by making a top 40 hit out of this song. By 1979 Paul McCartney delivered his smash hit Coming Up to the world.

Sandy FarinaStrawberry Fields Forever : Sandy Farina, where did you go? Sandy plays Strawberry Fields in the movie. This song is about her character. The Beatles version was associated with LSD for some reason. Sandy explains that Strawberry Fields is really the name of a girl who resides in Pepperland. She's never even smelled marijuana and would leave the room immediately if she did. This version is superior to the Beatles version in every way. She rescues it from a druggy sounding mess to a plaintive cry for love and peace in a confusing world. Sandy Farina is the most talented member of this cast and one of the few who was not doing tons of cocaine just to make it through the shoot. I can't imagine why she never appeared in another movie after this.

Frankie Howerd / Sandy FarinaWhen I'm Sixty-Four : George Burns was too old to perform this song in the film. Enter Frankie Howard. Frankie should have had his own sitcom. He would have rivaled Three's Company.

Frankie HowerdMean Mr. Mustard: Abby Road again. George Martin gets it right this time.

George BurnsFixing A Hole: Not about heroin. It's about something else. I don't want to ruin the film.

Alice Cooper / Bee GeesBecause : Alice Cooper and The Bee Gees! Finally!!

Peter FramptonGolden Slumbers " Better than anything on Frampton Cums Alive.

Bee GeesCarry That Weight : Perhaps this film should have been called Abby Road.

AerosmithCome Together: Terrible. This belongs on an Aerosmith album, not here.

Maurice Gibb / Peter Frampton / George Burns / Bee GeesBeing For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite: George Burns rocks out! Mr Kite is an old guy who dresses funny. Who Knew?

Peter FramptonThe Long And Winding Road : Phil Spector eat yer heart out.

Barry Gibb / Bee GeesA Day In Life : Exactly what the world had been waiting for! A Bee Gees remake of A Day In The Life. So much better with disco orchestration than the bland original. George Martin's peak! He must be very, very proud of this remake. Probably his finest hour, or at least his finest 20 minutes. (I'm not sure how much time he spent on this). Barry Gibb is so much better than John Lennon. I'm glad he decided to improve on the original. It needed it.

Billy PrestonGet Back: Billy wishes his services were still needed in The Rolling Stones. Nice cameo, though.

Cast Of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, TheSgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise): The whole cast get together for the grand finale. Again, The Beatles 1967 album is made to look primitive and silly with this production. Try doing The Hustle to the Beatles version. No way. The disco groove that was missing from the 1967 version is in full force here. This album is a masterpiece.

9/10.
