The first time I ever heard the title track of YAWYI was a different version on youtube. It was much louder with more of a synth sound and none of the "can you speak more clearly" stuff (if I recall correctly.) It was the best version I ever heard but it is long gone on youtube. Sure the video had the Chunga's Revenge picture. Can any of you recall the vid?

What album is it from? A YCDTOSA volume or something else? The sound quality was top notch and I never thought it was a live song.

The buffalo version is close. It's definitely not Thing-Fish. It may be from Cheap Thrills! I need to seek it out.

This Youtube video has a number of outtakes from YAWYI. It's mostly early mixes.

The song "You Are What You Is" begins at 47:08.

I doubt this is what you're looking for, but it's interesting nonetheless...

YAWYI on Cheap Thrills is the Thing-Fish version so don't look there, I like the Buffalo example a good fast tempo rocker, Stonybrooks got a good version also and Volare, but hey there must be well over 20 versions of this song around on the bootleg circuit for you to sort through, heres a short list to get you started:

Bienvenue En Suisse
Boot The Beats
Fits Your 34B No Matter Which 43B You Are
Here Comes Santa Cruz
Rotter-Damned
The Zappa Times
And don't forget Stonybrook and Volare

It's probably some SBR and it be from before 81 or the beginning of 81,Ray's vocals are Overdubbed on all the official releases bar Buffalo it looks like the song was out for 3 years with vocals missing and they pop up live around same time as YAWYI LP.

Edit it wil not be 81 tour started september same time as YAWYI LP and first i heard it live is MTV suppose it was added too fit the Video and stuck it in there live :|

Yeah it's pretty much this. Only the vocals may have been overdubbed because it didn't sound live and had a real clean sound. And as I said 'nigger' was censored in the version I am on about.

Thankyou anyway, this is a really great version.

I'll keep searching!

The only censored version was a pressing of the single for radio.

Oh yeah I didn't! I intended to say that though, I figured I did.

If the only censored version is the clean cuts version then maybe I thought the version I heard was censored. Maybe it said nigger in a weird voice I didn't make it out and I thought it was a sound effect. I heard this on youtube about 4 or 5 five years ago. Listened to it lots before I was a Zappa fan.

I might find it one day. Thanks for all the input.

In the early live versions from 1980 FZ, Ike and Ray all sang nigger, but later FZ just said it himself like on the album. In some versions he would substitute other joke words, e.g. "student" at a college gig.

Starts at 47.07min
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCnnbPvQeSk
Frank Zappa OUTTAKES You Are What You Is (unissued different versions)

Sounds like LP just more keyboard up front until Nigger then sounds alot Muffled and sounds like a different Tribe song  then back too more Keyboard.
Funny that is what New Wave is all about Keyboard up front guitar backing vise versa too the 70's.
