So who here is into Metal? In general or specific sub genres (there are at least 70 of them). I have noticed lots of youtube comments on Zappa videos saying "I used to only listen to Metal but now I am in love with this music too" and going on to explain how Zappa's music has made them appreciate other types of music especially Jazz.

That would be the same for me. I have always been into Metal and especially Thrash but Zappa always did something for me and got me into Jazz and Orchestral music.

Pretty much all the music I listen to and favorite bands are metal but my number one favorite musician is Zappa.

Anyone else feel like this?

I like heavy metal. My favorite band is BOC, but there's a lot out there I listen to. I'm not much into thrash or death metal though.

If it's loud and/or obnoxious, I like it!

Well i will quote one of my favorite musicians, who said this at a concert I was at, 1973 King crimson, and slade, KC was first and the crowd wanted them off the stage, Robert Fripp stopped the band and told the audience that if they wanted to continue with music that would not destroy their eardrums they would continue otherwise they would leave. They played one more song and left i was pissed, this was the Larks tongue band, Bruford was brilliant.

I don't think any music can destroy your eardrums unless you are right next to a wall of amps when somebody strikes their guitar. And I would also like to say that Heavy Metal wasn't really about in 1973. Sabbath had been about for 3 years but were still a really heavy blues/rock band. I wouldn't say true heavy metal came about until Judas Priest released their second album Sad Wings of Destiny in 1976.

No.

But I like Led Zeppelin, Dio & Dio-era Sabbath and I'm a casual fan of Megadeth & Metallica. However, most of the time, when I'm in a metal mood (no Pat Boone pun intended), I listen to more progressive artists like Rush, Dream Theater, Devin Townsend & Fates Warning...

Go back and listen to Symptom Of The Universe and Megalomania from the 1975 Sabotage album.

In William Burroughs 1962 book Soft Machine there is a character called Uranian Willy the Heavy Metal Kid.

It's also said Rolling Stones magazine said Alice Cooper were heavy metal when trying to describe their music and was the first use of the phrase towards a band/music.

And yes of course. Heavy Metal Thunder....

Also Sabotage was probably the heaviest Sabbath ever got apart from maybe Mob Rules. Great album, my favorite of theirs.

Metal that I like......Dio, Dio era Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Pantera.

That's about it, though I love Rainbow, Deep Purple, and Blue Cheer. I'm burned out on Zeppelin. I still listen to them, but not as much as other bands.

Captain Beyond, summer of '72, a cross of Iron Butterfly and Deep Purple. Their first album still kicks ass 41 years later.

For me, the first hints of Heavy Metal can be found on The Return of the Giant Hogweed (Genesis) and Larks Tong in Aspic (King Crimson)...

lets not forget Jimi, live back in 68 pretty heavy, unless we are talking mindless shredding, hey most of the guys that play that only do it for cash; the motorhead guy not included, but i saw metallica's guitar player say in a interview that he love playing in NYC that way when the show was done he could catch some great jazz at the clubs.

I think earliest stuff close to Metal was Sabbath, Blue Cheer, Zeppelin & Deep Purple. But of course all these bands had blues/folk elements. I still think Priest were the first people to strip that out and be the first all out metal band.

It says near the same thing on Wiki they took the Blues Element Out of It :| Yes though that don't weight for others not being heavy or even heavier before  Priest They Stole more from Glam metal bit of Alice Copper and Sabbath ,Budgie would be more taste if they left a guy that sounds like a girl on Vocals out.

The origin of the term heavy metal in relation to a form of music is uncertain. The phrase had been used for centuries in chemistry and metallurgy and is listed as such in the Oxford English Dictionary. An early use of the term in modern popular culture was by counter-culture writer William S. Burroughs. In the 1962 novel, The Soft Machine, he introduces the character "Uranian Willy, the Heavy Metal Kid". His next novel in 1964, Nova Express, develops this theme further, with heavy metal being a metaphor for addictive drugs: "With their diseases and orgasm drugs and their sexless parasite life forms — Heavy Metal People of Uranus wrapped in cool blue mist of vaporized bank notes — And the Insect People of Minraud with metal music."

Never much cared for the metal sound , especially when they ' took the blues out '.

For what it's worth, I don't like rock music much at all, but I do like a lot of metal, of the darkest variety.

I very rarely give anyone credit for inventing genres but Tony Iommi invented metal. The song Black Sabbath from 1970 is not blues rock. Metal came from Iommi chopping off the tips of his 2 fingers. He wasn't playing that way before the accident.

Nod to Geezer for the lyrics.
