Very sad day. He was a huge talent. He could move from jazz to R&B to Brazilian music to just complete WTF within the space of a few songs. I got to see his band open up for Herbie Hancock at a jazz festival in Maryland a couple years ago, but I really wish Gail & Dweezil had been able/willing to get him for the first ZPZ tour, when they were spending the $$$ to bring out the alumni. Hearing him play some Zappa in person would have been wonderful. He brought a lot of soul and groove to Frank's band, which none of Frank's later keyboardists were able to match, even if some of them were more technically gifted.

I got the impression about 2 or 3 years ago that he was very much into doing his own stuff, and didn't want to tour with ZPZ. But he wasn't opposed to doing a one-off date with them.

At the last GM show I picked up NMB's "Balls" CD, which is way more influenced by GD than FZ. A couple of the funky/jazzy/bluesy/freak-outy songs on it are really good. Mike Keneally, Chester Thomson didn't hurt either. Napi plays keys with additional keys from Tom Tripp. Very George Duke-ish. Napi wrote the whole kit and caboodle with a thanx to GD and god and a few mere mortals. You can hear the GD influence all throughout the CD. Almost 4 outta 5 stars. imho
George Duke's music will live on through other younger artist too. His music is ageless...like Frank's. 8)

Thanks for sharing that Duke & Ponty King Kong clip.

I'm sure most everybody here already has this album in their collection - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7xLdKqNc9k

Oh NOOOOOO!!! My favorite Zappa keyboardist without question. Ever since hearing Inca Roads from OSFA back in 76, I was sold to Zappa. Much of that initiation was due to Duke's keyboards. This is so sad news.

Check out Zappa's expression while Duke plays the OSFA Inca Roads solo on A Token of His Extreme - a huge nod/smile of approval.

Very sad news. He seemed to be a bloke with a big heart.
Good to see Studebaker back on the boards. I used to enjoy his posts before I actually signed up to the forum back in 2003-5 sort of time.

My exact reply when I saw Sheila's post on FB. Part of me dies with this news....being a 26 year old Zappa fan sucks. I wasn't there to see Frank, and now that I've gotten older, all the Alumni are slowly fading away (due to location I don't live close enough to any Grandmothers shows either).

FUCK

George Duke was my favorite musician, his solos used to give to Zappa music the best sound

I checked a bunch of clips yesterday after I heard the bummer news
This one was pretty cool, George with Billy Cobham, Alphonso Johnson & a young John Scofield

It's a crime that this Cannonball Adderley album from 1971, featuring some of the best playing of George Duke's career, has never been issued on cd. Duke gets into some spacy echoplex and ring modulator sounds. There's wild guitar, incredible jams and inspired compositions. If you're a Zawinul fan you might be interested in hearing Duke improvise on a 14 minute Dr Honoris Causa.

He was there, maybe once every ten years he'd whip it out like all people do...as an old home movie. :|
