Last Friday was a Double Zappa Event Day!

I went to Cal Schenkel's Art showing at Firecat Studios. Then later in the evening went to see... let's say Joe or Thing-Fish so it takes a little longer for the post to be removed.

Image
Cal's showing was good. A friend of mine bought this one:

I bought a considerably cheaper $20 one, but the signature I wanted was on The Unmoderated. As Forum Archaologists may know, the Cover of The Unmoderated was photographed and put together by White Person. Then, during the course finishing the project, he disappeared. Occasionally, he's spotted here or there, but otherwise, he is incommunicado.
Anyway, he took the picture for the cover in Cal's back yard. He had told me how he spent time there for an afternoon and Cal was a very good host to him. But, since I can't talk to WP anymore, I thought I'd see if Cal would verify that these were his Beethoven busts on the cover.
So, after waiting for Cal in a sweaty room as he spoke with the hob-nobbers, I explained the story to Cal and he said yes that he did have Beethoven busts in his back yard. Due to the picture having been pixelated, he couldn't confirm that they were HIS Beethoven busts, but said "Its possible". So, I said that if that was his opinion, then could he write that. He did. He wrote "Its possible..." and handed it back to me. I asked, can you write your name or something to say that you are referring to the picture. "You want me to personalize it or something?". He then asked me to repeat my forum name, wrote that and signed it.

Image
While he was signing it, I mentioned WP's real name, which made his eyes perk up. He asked if I had seen him recently. I said that jimmie d and debutante daisy might know more, but he rolled his eyes as though he sees them every other day. He also said that if it was WP who took the picture then they are definitely his Beethoven busts, but I figured that he had had enough of this story and left it like it was. He looked like he was very ready to leave with no chance in sight.
That was on the north side of Chicago.
The show I went to was on the south side. When I got there Thing-Fish was sitting outside with a youngster who seemed REALLY happy to be there. He turned out to be the bass player. I talked to TF for a while, told him about Cal being in town, which he seemed happy about. He mentioned his recent tour in Europe.
The show was fun. Very much an FZ Songbook kinda show. Only a drummer, bassist, guitarist and Thing-Fish. Lots of stuff that was fun to sing along with. There were instrumentals of the guitar nature as well, of which I think that TF has improved a great deal over the years and I really enjoy his playing more over time. Even though it was just a small combo, TF still worked up a sweat and talking to him afterward he gave me the usual "Was that alright for ya?". Always.
The bass player was hilarious onstage dancing like the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz. (Picture suitably blurry in the hopes of not deleting the post)

Great post Arkay. Good to hear that the picture was verified. It's still a tiny bit disappointing that the person in question did what he did though. He was one of my favorite posters back then - but he didn't seem all that funny in retrospect, afterwards.

Does anyone else remember White Person? Didn't he collaborate on The Unmoderated with Arkay and the gang, RK? I think he was gone by '07 when I first arrived as KAPT.KIRK here. I don't recall what he was like really, other than credits on The Unmoderated CD. :|

BTW: What did he do cal? :?: :?

Crap. Now, I have to start all over again!

And... yeah, always a bit disappointing to think about WP. He had a huge creative streak, for both audio and visuals, great at seeing innate humor of situations. The way he left was so weird that I can't help but think it had something to do with his girlfriend and her kid or money in general or worse. He made everything sound so DEFCON 1 the last time we talked. I had a couple great phone conversations with him, but still can't say I really knew the guy. It was like he had to draw a line in the sand and not waste time with frivolous artistic or forum time-killers because of some serious reason that he wouldn't give details about. He stopped answering the phone and posting. By the time the cd was copied and sent out to everyone, I hadn't heard or seen him in months.
It is interesting that Cal remembered him so vividly, but clearly hadn't seen him in a while. I wish I had asked when the last time he'd seen WP was. If I had to guess, I'd say he still lurks around here on occasion. Maybe he'll say hi some time.

*shrug* I just thought he was a funny person here on the forum. It was just odd the way it turned out.

Maybe he'll (WP) pop in and say wassup? No need to explain any further...
I would encourage, if it's cool with Arkay, to buy a copy of The UnModerated from him. It's a Zappa theory put to the test with forum folks with pleasing results. For a Zappa.com forum member it's a must!
Fer sure, fer sure! :D

I do alright. But to be honest, the vast majority of those shows are small club gigs with ticket prices under $10-15. Half the times, I spend more on drinks than on the price of admission. If I were smart, I'd drink half as much as go to see twice as many shows.

You got me beat by a few there Bob :) . I don't go to the big corporate arena shows, could care less. I think the most I paid this year will be for ZPZ. Cobham & Hawkwind were around $30. Yeah, average price for me is about $20. I turned down free tix to Alice In Chains & Jane's Addiction the other night. I hate the venue it was at, otherwise I would have. Saw AIC once opening for Ozzy 20 yrs ago, never Jane's. Both bands are way past their prime anyway. It's pure '90s nostalgia. A band like the Melvins or Clutch, IMO their newest material is as strong as what they did 20 yrs ago. The general idiot public has no idea plus it's better that way.

So far:
Bobby Previte Trio
Billy Cobham's "Spectrum 40th"
D.R.I.
Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber
Meat Puppets
Today Is The Day with KEN mode
Clutch with Orange Goblin, & Lionize
KEN mode with Sulaco
Steven Wilson Band
Mary Halvorson/Weasel Walter Trio
Primus with Mike Dillon Band
Black Flag
FLAG
Jucifer
Swans
Melvins with Honky
Bob Mould Trio
Volto!
Baroness with Royal Thunder

Coming up:
KEN mode with Rosetta
D.O.A.
Chelsea Light Moving
Clutch with The Sword, and Crobot
Lee Ranaldo & The Dust
Hawkwind
ZPZ
Doug Stanhope

You were lucky! You saw Neil just before his guitarist broke his hand, and they cancelled the rest of the European Tour.
You must live right!

Uh, I didn't know Poncho broke his hand. Yep, I should be lucky. It was such a great show and I'm very glad I saw Neil on stage for the first time.

Black Sabbath in Los Angeles on the 3rd. The Irvine show was great, except they cut 'Dirty Women'
I hope they will play it on Tuesday.

Yeah! I got my Dirty Women. And they played old-school pornos during. Betty Page was spanking this chick in one clip. Ozzy sang perfect. And he pinned the bucket roadie down and humped him at one point!

Just announced: Tony Levin's Stickmen will co-headline w/ The Aristocrats in January 2014. A must see for sure.

Yeah! when I hear the news of "Poncho's" broken hand I realized how lucky I was to have seen the boys in Vienne, France last july. Was a fantastic show.

.....Steve Vai next week here in Bordeaux. Should be bitchen!!
