He's not my favorite rhythm guitarist, but this quote fucked with my head long enough for him to be included on this list:

"You should never hear the guitar by itself. It should be part of the drums so it sounds like the drummer is playing chords—like the snare is in A or the hi-hat in D minor"
—Freddie Green

My old Jazz Band teacher in high school used to tell me how the guitar didn't need to be very loud and he'd use Freddy Green as an example. Freddie Green was Count Basie's guitarist for a long time and set the standard for what many people believe to be the way to play rhythm guitar in a big band.

The Edge Does depend alot on delay i give it that
I was think about Richie Havens i could not remember his name i think he likes a lot of open Tuning good though.

Check this out he uses a .eighth Analog Delay sounds nice too,It's weird though how i never see Rodgers guitar not in the 5th position on His Strat though it sounds like the 2nd position for a Strat imho.

One band come,
One band go.
One band stay and play.
In the name of Glove,
One more in the name of Glove.
(rinse & repeat)

U2?

John Fogarty, Buddy Holly, Richie Havens, Billy C. Farlow are all pretty good, but here's the top ten I found on TheTopTens list.

James Hetfield
Zacky Vengeance
Dave Mustaine
Malcom Young
Izzy Stradlin
John Lennon
Keith Richards
Johnny Ramone
Scott Ian
Sam Totman

Actually, you're half correct. Let me be more specific:

The Edge (1980-1999)

Because from 2000 up until now, I'd consider him a fucking HACK (and that goes for U2 as well)!!

FUCKIN' RIGHT!!! I saw Scofield last month and was completely blown away!

By the way, I notice a lot of you folks are putting lead guitar players as your favorite rhythm players. Should this list be strictly rhythm players, i.e. no solos?

No Nile can play lead(solo) like a beast though never with Distortion,Good question you asked though when i start the thread was thinking that it ain't as eazy as Like they have the Greatest thinking that Hendrix would be on this list has IMHO he was not far of best at whatever,i looked at other polls now and they all have what like you said Guitar solo Players not Rhythm CATS.

Well, I reckon the ones nominating Mr. Enigmatic Imperial himself may be well in awe of his soloing abilities, but he was certainly a fab rhythm player as well. It's a bit like nominating Ian Underwood as your favourite saxophonist, even though he was an absolutely competent and accomplished keyboardist as well.

Not sure how I would characterize it (maybe lead rhythm guitar) but Bob Weir's work on the "Playing in the Band" track on his "Ace" solo album is really good, particularly the section starting at 2:45 with Jerry.

Yes, but did you listen to the track? First listen to the track and then re-post.

I think it is safe to say that the Grateful Dead is not for everybody.

Fuck everybody then!

I just wanted to say that, I'm not a Dead Head, they were like the house band around here. I did hear that Bob Weir left the stage because of people talkin' through his set recently. He came back out and played with Ratdog though. And he is a good rhythm guitarist. Dead or no. 8)
