Just thought of him. He isn't considered a lead guitarist so it made perfect sense, even had the "D'oh, why didn't I think of him!" factor.

Actually, you're half correct. Let me be more specific:

The Edge (1980-1999)

Because from 2000 up until now, I'd consider him a fucking HACK (and that goes for U2 as well)!!

shut the fuck up, fanboy douche.

That's nice.

Btw, I'm willing to bet you've only heard U2's radio staples and haven't heard most or all of their albums? Why don't you listen to Achtung Baby, Zooropa & Pop and then come back to me and say The Edge was a fucking hack during this era?

Achtung Baby and Zooropa are certainly quite decent albums in my opinion, esp. Zooropa.

I think The Edge attracts a fair bit of resentment or even outright ridicule for the fact he uses so many delay pedals on his guitars. Even if he doesn't play just one note that sounds like many notes with all these fancy pedals, those accustomed to more standard guitar rock would still complain the Edge doesn't play real music, he just hides behind the talent boosters.

When I was a little boy Lenny Breau used to come over to visit my father and they would sit up late while Lenny played a 1968 Gibson J50 that is now my guitar. I thought Lenny was spooky but listening to him play I figured he must be beautiful.

I think effects are great and I don't believe it's possible to hide behind them. Managing an effect is a talent. I love Bootsy Collins and Syd Barrett, for example. I think The Edge sucks because it sounds to me like the only reason The Edge plays guitar is because he wants to be really rich and really famous and not because he gives a shit about doing anything musically.

There were never any tapes to begin with. My dad never taped it! It was just a casual, hanging out in the living room thing. Of course, the guitar is special to me because it was my fathers and not so much because Lenny played it. But that's cool, too, and when I meet other Lenny Breau fans I have to tell them about it.

I agree there is still devotion too play with effects but the Edge with Delay don't count as Good Rhythm what if they never came out with delay you would say he is good at Rhythm Guitar

Amazing story, downer! Lenny is one of my all time faves. Also amazing that you got to see him, slime. I am forever grateful to Randy Bachman for helping to restore Lenny's legacy.

Bo Diddley. His style was so distinctive they named a beat after him.

Joe Walsh. Mainly his stuff with the James Gang and early solo albums.

Stevie Ray Vaughan. He is another one who could mix playing rhythm and lead at the same time.

So you haven't heard his playing on these albums, yet you're qualified to tell everyone that he's a hack? Well, that's logical!

And btw, I wasn't telling you what to do. I was asking you a question.

Glad you seemed to like it, Cleon; he Moreland was also a king of feedback. Wall of Voodoo did a good version of "Ring of Fire", too - mangling beautifully (I think) towards the end...

Only problem is you never get to see what he's doing - he was really shy

Syd Barrett was somehow great, even when he was wasted. "Rats", for example...

I even have a secret love for the unfinished crap he laid down in '74. Even at his worst, he was interesting.

That's fine - either you like it, or you don't; the backing sure ain't complex, but I like it as noise more than music.
