My new girlfriend likes Billy Joel amongst others…(Elton John, George Michael etc)…
She Knows that I am a big fan of Frank and she disses him as soon as she hears him.. ”That’s not music! Where’s the melody? That’s just a noise!!” she says. I laugh back and say she just dosn’t understand and she probably never will. She doesn’t like it when I say that to her.
I never try to shove Frank in her face but because I play Zappa a lot she gets to hear it a lot “Turn that down..Dont you know any nice songs!” HAHA! I do laugh and let her get on with it…But deep inside im bubbling over. She says Elton John is the genius and Billy joel is the best because he is more popular. What can I say to that? I've told her that popular doesnt mean good and to compare these to the like of Frank is like comparing the brain of Einstien to that of a warm turd.
Anyway.. Im off listening to Brixton Still Life in the bath. REALLY LOUD.

Sounds like she has very limited idea of what "melody" means, even though FZ was pretty melody-orientated himself. If FZ said in 1973 Downbeat interview that he misses "the melodies" the most in contemporary music, I'm afraid it was not the Elton John/Billy Joel type of generic melodicism. I can only wager she's never even heard "The Rite of Spring" by Igor Stravinsky. And possibly: if you whipped it out, she'd dismiss it as "tuneless classical crap". It's frustrating that people even tend to dismiss Stravinsky that "If I haven't heard any of his work, then it must mean he was not an important composer". Tchaikovsky would be sort of okay for these folks, maybe Prokofiev or Shostakovich, but Stravinsky? It's not merely that elitists like T.Adorno laud "Schoenberg as a progressive, but Stravinsky as a reactionary", but common folks probably think he is inferior to Tchaikovsky simply because of not being as famous as these other Russian composers. Talk about falling between two stools! The same malady affected Zappa: too pretentious for common folks, but too sleazy for hipsters like The Rolling Stone music critics as well.

I sympathise deeply with you, Blobbers. You're so patient, I'd have dumped her in a week.

Couldn’t get my hands on any cinder blocks..thinking of using her record collection

Don’t really wanna dump her…she's great apart from her musical tastes…

Maybe you could work on some associations...such as do nice things for her like get her flowers or go down on her while Frank's playin'...and while Billy Joel is on, drop her grandmothers turkey platter, or fart, or stuff like that. :) :)

Good idea baddy. Start a subliminal bombardment campaign that makes her want Frank...real bad and in the worst way! Ha! Good luck blob.

Perhaps she is nicer than your ex, but it really sounded like she was someone that doesn't know how to diplomatically express her difference in music taste: "That's not music!" and "That's just noise!", this all sounds rather finger-pointing to my mind. She should be saying things like: "I don't like this". Or "This kind of difficult music is not communicating to me". Or even "I want something with simpler melodies...like Billy Joel or Elton John".

It seems given and inevitable that Zappamusic or any kind of progressive stuff is very male-orientated. Then again, I question whether women have not been culturally brainwashed to accept more middle-of-the-road kind of pop music? It's a bit of a chiche that many women like female singers like Kate Bush and Jennifer Rush, because these pop-idols are the kind of women role models they can relate to. But isn't that pop-cultural conditioning? I certainly think it's nurture rather than nature that progressive stuff is for men and M.O.R. stuff is for the ladies. Unless someone comes up with some theory how women's brains are built a bit differently and are a priori lacking in cerebral compartments that men need in order to get the weird stuff. :)

After 25 years with my wife, she's started to like Zappa a bit - give her time.

Ed: I believe that girls and music comes more from a social standpoint than as a direct result of their taste.
My boyfriend was no Zappa fan, and he was a fan of reggae, which I despise, but since we're both articulate and friendly individuals, we let each other in peace.
And what helped was that there was music we both liked. Try to find that.

Yes, oral sex might do it. You on her, I mean. Without being asked. With heart and perseverance. And Watermelon in Easter Hay playing in the background......

If she's hot your going to have to listen to more Elton John, but Billy Joel may be the deal breaker... :smoke:
