That is a picture of many of the famous jazz stars that were alive in 1958. The picture is referred to as A Great Day in Jazz 1958. Now that Marian McPartland is gone, only 3 of the people in that picture are still alive, Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins and Billy Crump.

There is a whole movie about it. Its been a while since I've seen it though. I think they were literally there to take the picture though. So many of the biggest stars in jazz worked and lived in the same part of NY at that time.

That photo was also a central plot point of that Tom Hanks film The Terminal.

Sir David Frost

Sir David Frost, who has died aged 74, began his career in television satirising the patrician establishment and ended it with a knighthood, a duke as a father-in-law and a reputation as the television personality politicians on both sides of the Atlantic most wanted to be interviewed by.

David Frost was 74. He should have lived to 84; but as we've seen with any number of other people, being in close proximity to Nixon took ten years off his life.

I don't know if Nixon was radioactive or just plain evil. But whichever it is, Henry Kissinger seems to be immune to it: he still walks the Earth...

No wish to speak ill of the dead, but I did tend to agree with Peter Cook's description of Frostie as the "bubonic plagiarist" and when asked what his regrets in life were, Cookie replied: "Saving David Frost from drowning." Which, apparently, he did actually (once).

Ohio turd who held 3 women captive found dead

A corrections official in Ohio reports that Ariel Castro, who held 3 women captive for a decade in Ohio, has apparently committed suicide.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The man who held three women captive in his home for nearly a decade before one escaped has been found dead and is believed to have committed suicide, a prison official said.

Ariel Castro, 53, was found hanging in his cell around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, a community located south of Columbus in central Ohio, JoEllen Smith, Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokesman, said early Wednesday.

Prison medical staff performed CPR before Castro was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

He was in protective custody because of the notoriety of his case, meaning he was checked every 30 minutes, but was not on suicide watch, Smith said.

Messages were left for Castro's attorneys at their offices and were not immediately returned.

The three women disappeared separately between 2002 and 2004, when they were 14, 16 and 20 years old. They escaped May 6, when one of the women broke part of a door and yelled to neighbors for help. Castro was arrested that evening.

Castro was sentenced Aug. 1 to life in prison plus 1,000 years on his guilty plea to 937 counts including kidnapping and rape.

That was quick. Couple of weeks of a life sentence and poof dead as Dillinger.

So I guess he figured out that being imprisoned and held against your will isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

Last Hitler bodyguard Rochus Misch dies

Image

A former bodyguard of Adolf Hitler who witnessed the Nazi dictator's final hours has died in Germany aged 96.

Rochus Misch was the last survivor from Hitler's bunker in Berlin.

The former SS man had operated the telephones in the bunker and had proudly reminisced about his wartime duties for the "boss".

He had called Hitler "a very normal man... he was no brute, he was no monster", according to the Associated Press news agency.

Actually, I thought his autobiography wasn't a bad read at all. Certainly a lot less biased in favour of Hitler than those of the adjutants e.g. Linge. He was the last man who remained in the bunker to the end, even after Bormann et al had attempted a breakout.

Showman car salesman Cal Worthington dies at 92

Cal Worthington, the Oklahoma native whose old-time carnival flair built one of the most successful car dealerships west of the Mississippi, has died. He was 92.

Worthington died Sunday while watching football at his home on the Big W Ranch near Orland, Calif., said Brady McLeod of the Miles Law Firm in Sacramento, which represented Worthington.

Described as a cross between Dale Carnegie and Slim Pickens, Worthington was best known for his wacky television pitches that had him wrestling with a tiger, flying upside down on an airplane wing or riding a killer whale. His sales antics with his “Dog Spot” drove a career that took him from a three-car lot on a patch of Texas dirt to a multi-make dealership empire that grossed billions of dollars and stretched from Southern California to Alaska.

FULL OBITUARY: Cal Worthington and his wacky pitches
