Photo: Norman Seeff
Who: Frank Zappa

When: 1976

Where: Los Angeles

What you don’t see: Frank came in and he was quite unique because he had a duel quality. He was relaxed in front of the camera but not a “hang out, casual” kind of guy. He seemed to have a very mental process behind it, going from one thing to another, almost posed, but very imaginative. I ended up with dozens of fascinating shots, with his wry sense of humor about them. I saw my strobe reflect in his glasses as he looked at me, and it was so Frank Zappa.

After the shoot: That first shoot we didn’t hang out afterward, but later I would end up forming a long-lived connection with Frank and his family — with the kids, Moon and Dweezel. Frank couldn’t be anything but creative and irreverent with that unusual sense of humor.

Wow, what an awesome photo. That looks like Tripp standing up at the vibes and Zappa behind his kit.
'68 rehearsal / jam or drum duet?

All I know is it's from 1969 Royal Albert Hall, London, UK.

I was watching Letterman the other night, went in the other room for a moment, heard this ungodly noise and rushed out to turn the tv the fuck down....yes, it was Yoko Ono screeching into a mic at the Ed Sullivan Theater. Just ghastly. Were my eyes deceiving me, or was that one of The Flaming Lips sitting on the floor next to her? Weird.

Saw the same show with the sound way down for that segment. There was a person in a bag there too and it looked like Lennon's kid was playin' in the band too. Sorta' weird how those two are inseparable.

My mind drifts back...back...back to the early '70s. My mother came barging into my room asking what was going on. Her dog (a Yorkshire Terrier) was jumping up and down, and yowling at my door. I said "Beats me. I'm just sittin' here, listening to the Yoko Ono stuff on John Lennon's "Live Peace in Toronto, 1969."
She made me promise to never play it again!

I saw that Letterman show too, and it was indeed Sean playing guitar behind Yoko. I liked it and I like her other music too. As long as it's not on for too long..... That's the key.

What instrument could it be at Bunk's hands? Too small to be a bassoon, too big to be a soprano sax, too conical to be a clarinet. My guess is that
it is probably a straight alto sax.
