On my way to a funeral yesterday I grabbed the Lou Reed box set. He is the only person who would cheat and rhyme the same word twice in a lyric.

Just like poison in a vile, hey she was often very vile. - Caroline Says

"Beaker" or "test-tube" just does not have the same flow

This was in September, but I only found out today. Lindsay Cooper (of Henry Cow fame) has passed away after years of ailing from multiple sclerosis.

Update: Hang on, I'm seeing that it was declared extinct in late 2011. Am I missing something?

Important loss with Doris. Loss of Burts - I only miss the Lonesome Cowboy (JCB) variety - apart from Deliverance, of course.

That film Deliverance doesn't really seem like it needs a sequel. But I guess now that Hollywood has more or less eliminated writers from the mix, anything is up for grabs.

I agree.

Burt will end up starring in a denture commercial. You can only coast off of Hooper residuals for about half a decade. Clint Eastwood on the other hand is still directing and creating.

Thomas Howard, 30, dies in high-speed car accident

Image

Former Raiders linebacker Thomas Howard was one of two individuals killed in a high-speed crash early Monday morning in Oakland, an official from the Alameda County Coroner's office confirmed to NFL Media. Howard was 30.

KRON-TV reported that witnesses informed police that the driver of a gray BMW 750Li sedan, identified as Howard, was seen heading north along Highway 880 at more than 100 mph when he lost control of the vehicle and slammed into the back of a semi truck, according to authorities.

The BMW shot over the center median into the southbound lane before striking both a Chevrolet Monte Carlo and a gray Honda CR-V.

Howard was selected by the Raiders in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft out of the University of Texas at El Paso. After 62 starts with Oakland over five seasons, Howard went on to start 16 games for the Cincinnati Bengals between 2011 and 2012. The Atlanta Falcons signed Howard in October before releasing him earlier this month to make room for Sean Weatherspoon.

Howard's family released the following statement:

"We are grateful for the outpouring of prayers, love and support we have received today. During this difficult time, we ask that you respect the privacy of our family ...

"Please continue to pray for both families."

Frederick Sanger, inventor of DNA sequencing

Image

Frederick Sanger, OM, CH, CBE, FRS, FAA /ˈsæŋər/ (13 August 1918 – 19 November 2013) was a British biochemist who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry twice, the only person to have done so. In 1958 he was awarded a Nobel prize in chemistry "for his work on the structure of proteins, especially that of insulin". In 1980, Walter Gilbert and Sanger shared half of the chemistry prize "for their contributions concerning the determination of base sequences in nucleic acids". The other half was awarded to Paul Berg "for his fundamental studies of the biochemistry of nucleic acids, with particular regard to recombinant-DNA". He was the fourth person to have been awarded two Nobel Prizes, either individually or in tandem with others.
