from the first post- Lots of songs fade out at the end. Here's a few 'fade in' examples.

It's says SONGS. Not the sound of tape hiss before the song starts.
Holy fuck! Did you eat paint chips as a child?

Isn't the hiss part of the song, I ask quietly wishing no one bodily harm. It seems like an audio effect they used as part of the song rather than something separate.

I say no. Songs don't start until a note has been played. Be it a drum note, guitar, keys or voice. The sound of tape hiss is not a musical note. If my thread said album tracks that fade in w/ tape hiss , Immigrant Song would be first on the list.

Ask yourself this: Did Robert Plant sing 'hiissssssssss' when they played it live? If your answer is no; then it's not part of the song.

Have a nice day! 8)

Ah, but there is voice under that hiss, so since they could have left it off the track, but didn't.....

"There is a very faint count-off at the beginning of the track with lots of hiss which appears on the album version, but is trimmed from the single version. The hiss is feedback from an echo unit."

Blackened was mentioned on the first page but there's another, I think from And Justice For All but I can't think what it's called.
What about Theme from Burnt Weeny Sandwich, one of my all time favourite Zappa creations

Can't a sound effect be a part of a song? For example, the wind sounds that start off Bridge of Sighs and Don't Eat the Yellow Snow.

Well there you go, they're both great songs anyway.
