So I was listening to As An Am, and YCDTOSA#5 the last few days, and wishing for a complete show to be officially released. Something about this tour, Frank's playing was stellar, and the band was flawless  . To the ones who've heard everything - What is regarded as the best '82 show?

Very hard question. There are so many great shows.

I've noticed that the first two Road Tapes series have included shows that have never been circulating amongst tape traders. Considering that the frequency of shows being recorded and winding up in the tape trading circles increased as time went on, my question is how many shows in the 1980s are not circulating at all, as opposed to the 1970s shows (let alone original MOI stuff)? Okay, so most of Buffalo was in fact hitherto unheard before, but it definitely looks like, for instance the 1984 tape list represents a majority percentage of all shows actually performed.

Times certainly had changed from the Fillmore East 1971 era where all we had was that the music was recorded from the 5th to the 6th of June in 1971 and both dates had early and late shows. Whereas in the case of the 1988 band, tape traders can easily point out on what show is this segment and that segment from.

I doubt anything after '80 will be on Road Tapes as frank recorded all those shows 24 track and higher with UMRK Mobile, BUT on second thought there may be a few shows that were not recorded pro (I'm sure you guys know of a few for certain) and only exist as "guerilla" recordings that then would be candidates for the Road Tapes series.

I need to hear more 82 band stuff.

If there is anything between 76-79 lying about that'll be great too as this was when Zappa's guitar was at its peak in my opinion.

There is too much 1978 out there, BTB, HO, etc. Please we really don't need more "City of Tiny Lites."

A full concert with Captain Beefheart.

At this point of the posthumous releases and near to 100 albums, Bongo Fury alone (although I love it) does not make enough justice to this important collaboration/friendship/contribution with FZ.
This could also respond to the "guerilla" criteria.

A truely historic document.

I would like to recommend a 1979 show. The European tour was great and is still underrepresented in the Zappa catalogue. Zürich for example would be great. Or Köln, since this was my first Zappa show. So Gail, what do you think ? I would even send you a christmas card for one of these shows

I can't see the logic why 24track which was used also in 79 Live recordings is not worthy of being a Road Tape.

Presumably, it has to do with the sound quality of the recordings: a 24-track recording could be easily mixed to get very good sound (as in Hammersmith Odeon) whereas a 2-track or 4-track recording could not.
With the earlier road tapes the tapes had to be severely cleaned up to get acceptable sound.
That 2-track recording from 1980 with David Logeman that gave us Love Of My Life could qualify.

I didn't say 48 track.
Digital recordings from the early 80s suck. Listen to Peter Gabriel's album Security for further details.

Then again, your ears probably can't tell the difference. Perhaps a wax build up? Or maybe it's all that Wales smog.
