The fact that the Ensemble Modern actually PLAYED some of it is more impressive than the fact that someone typed/played it in!

While Jazz From Hell sounds to me artificial and bit lifeless (though I still prefer Synclavier version of G-Spot Tornado over orchestral version), from then FZ made big progress with the instrument. I can't imagine, how somebody can find music on CPIII cold and lifeless (well, except Put A Motor In Yourself, that's it) - you can hear dynamics in it, you have perfectly and absolutely clear sounding instruments playing at superhuman speed, and the music is very rich on textures and details. Anyway, you can hear, that it is machine-played, not human-played music, but that does not mean it is cold and lifeless. Frank used the instrument to avoid "the human factor" interfering with his compositions, but he managed to put lot of emotions and soul to his music - exactly the way he wanted to. No wonder, he nearly stopped playing guitar after discovering the Synclavier - it gave him much more ways to express himself, and his synclavier compositions are in most cases naturally flowing in a way similar to his guitar solos. I think, this is some of his most intimate music, he has ever written.

Frank's Synclavier music is some of the most amazing music ever written by anyone, ever.

End of story.

FZ compared synclavier and human musicians in his book and gave a definitive answer what he would prefer.

It's always surprising to me to hear this. Just listen to the drums, ONLY the drums on Jazz From Hell: In some instances it might seem a simple "dicso beat" (Night Scool), butt listenning to it carefully you'll see how rich is it in texture. I've said a friend a while ago that FZ's best albums are the ones he hade a brilliant drummer on it - Jazz from Hell is no exeption. :-)

just listen to G-Spot Tornato: while the Ensemble Modern keeps on playing the dullest "bamm-bamm-bamm" with the kick drum (bass drum), the original version has dozens of variations, differences in loudness and power... May sound surprisingly, but it's just so very LIVE. :-)

So I totally agree:

Just listened to Calculus. I can't believe we're being denied this album. Frank made his music to be heard.

Oh holy heck. Horrible, burn all the masters and incinerate the ashes for all time.

Wait, that was just the first listen. Great, great stuff.

Didn't Zappa say in an interview that his music was made for the people who were around at the time of the music's creation? Well, if so, The ZFT better get this album out soon while the older fans are still around (sorry guys)

Andre Lewis didn't get one either (in fact until last week, I had entirely missed that he had passed away)
