I caught "Any Downers" last night and "Phyniox [Take 1]" this afternoon on Zappa Radio.

Personally, I'd say that I vastly prefer this version/rehearsal of "Any Downers" to the 1981 YAWYI version; it's not as fun, per se, but it just grooves so much more, in my opinion. I dig the length of the track as well, plenty of space for FZ and the band to feel their way around the tune.

"Phyniox" was pleasantly relaxing; otherworldly and ethereal, yet still somewhat tame. I hope that since this is labeled as [Take 1], we'll hopefully be lucky enough to hear another take (or takes  ) in the near future. Luckily I had enough time to open Audacity's stereo streaming recorder and saved "Phyniox" for further listening at my own leisure :smoke:

Whatever the ZFT is planning, I'm eagerly looking forward to the release of more details about these songs and the rest of Joe's Camouflage.

Just caught "Phyniox Take 1". It's an interesting instrumental indeed. It's certainly Zappa-esque, as the keyboards are playing a riff based on typical FZ martial rhythm (like you can hear the horns and woodwinds playing at the end of "Eat That Question"), it's also a bit more hypnotic than typical FZ. It could have worked very well as a soloing vamp for some bigger composition, perhaps it was devised as an excuse for a guitar solo. Then of course Zappa came up with the likes of "Black Napkins" and "Zoot Allures", so maybe that's why nothing ever came out of "Phyniox"?

At this time Joe's Camouflage is not yet available.

I have no clue as to when Gail may release this.
The preview shows that Joe's Camouflage has moved the Corsaga project forward.

Quite possibly this would be the 5th release in the Corsaga, but then again, maybe there are other Cosaga's already awaiting a release. I guess it is possible some other mystery Corsaga project could be number 5. Joe's Camouflage certainly is a tasty project with two tracks stemming from the generalities of the Zoot Allures era.

I for one hope that the Corsaga could minimally have a baker's dozen.

I was listening to "Phyniox [Take 1]" with headphones the other day and noticed that there is some interesting stereo panning on FZs guitar solo. Given the history of how the Corsage series is produced it would make one think if Frank had done some studio work on the reel tape for that recording.

"Our Corsage series, they're just random—just examples of stuff that Frank had, intact," says Gail. "We don't do anything to them, we didn't try to construct them in any way." - Gail Zappa

In Jimmy Carl Black's book he mentions that Lonesome Cowboy Burt was written around the time of Freak Out. It would be interesting to hear that. Also he mentions that the earliest renditions of Trouble Every Day features Henry Vensentine (that's not right) and was a very bluesy type number - that material would be very interesting IMO.

In regards to Any Downers from Joe's Camouflage.

I am still wondering if this recording can be a rehearsal for the 76' Tour.
While I don't believe it was performed on that tour, the overall production sounds more refined
than it had during the Fall 75' Tour.

Compared to what was being performed during the Fall 75' Tour,
I think the Joe's Camouflage version is a polished Monster number.
I enjoy how Bozzio and Estrada interact and FZs solo is nirvana.
This was the pre-cursor to Punky's Whips. It put Terry out there.
I could only have wished that Terry had a chance to do this live.
For my taste I'll take this version to the desert island.

Another clue that puzzles the dateline is a soulful female vocal that seemingly only takes place at one brief moment in the song.
Take note of a vocal between the 10 and 13 second mark
"Ohh-a-a-wahhhh".
This is just before Terry Bozzio says "I just popped a couple more"
While it appears that Terry Bozzio takes the majority of the vocal parts Napoleon Murphy Brock did on the Fall 75' Tour, this one little part only further makes one question the time-frame of the recording. Hmmm

There is no doubting the great guitar work that happened during the Fall 75' Tour performances, but the Joe' Camouflage version has an overall more polished finish to it.

Actually he says the MOI started rehearsing it when they were finishing off Absolutely Free, but let's not split hairs: it would indeed be good to hear a pre-200 Motels version.

Reekin' at ya! I'd love to hear any of that. The vaultmeister might find a tape of it and put it on Zappa Radio if we ask him, eh? Worth a try? There was a thread here he was responding to awhile back, maybe a PM from IB would lend the idea some legitimacy and JT might take a look see? We'd at least know if any tapes exists or not. As I recall FZ didn't record all the rehearsals for the MOI or they're shows like he did with his bands after they broke up. :(
Just an thought anyway. 8)

@ Gray_Ghost That's ironically funny, but, to be fair, we already have the Xmas package. Although, remind me, what exactly did it have to do with Xmas again?

@ Gray_Ghost I know what it was called, that was my point. I was asking aside from the name, what did the content have to do with Xmas? I could dig it out and play it again I guess, but I was just asking on the fly - the momentum's gone out of this thing now.

Poly, allow me to dig it out for you.
The content gives two nods to xmas:
Track One: Mormon Xmas Dance Report
1:51 of GZ asking FZ to describe (which he does) a Mothers Xmas gig at the Mormon recreation hall in Pomona.
Track 10: Mousie's First Xmas 0:56 of electronica off of an ancient demo reel....

Definitely one for the completionist..
