I've grappled with the grumpy old man syndrome myself Calvin. A few bands that I have become a pretty big fan of who started about 1990 are Ween, Cracker, Primus, and Reverend Horton Heat. Others who have gained my attention are Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Mastadon, and Radiohead to name a few. There's lots of good new musicians and bands out there. You just have to try a little harder these days to find them.

I'm a fan of Dream Theater, although after Black Clouds I haven't been interested. Turn of Events and Dream Theater all sound like "rinse and repeat" of the early stuff. I get really tired of "release a recording or two then follow it up with a 3-CD live album" thing they've been doing too.

Geez, just played this for the first time and am annoyed by how loud the drums sound on this mix. Now I can understand why FZ was fired as a drummer because he kept on hitting the cymbals.
This version sounds better:

(this is one of the hardest songs in Super Crazy Guitar Maniac Deluxe 4, I've heard it so many times I've taken a shine to it.)

Not really NEW (2002), however the first track is really Pink Floydish and the rest of the album flows pretty good.
They've been busy since.....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archive_%28band%29
I just picked up their "Controlling Crowds" disks. Still pretty good.

Been listening to this one for a few days now, pretty cool! Lots of phasing or flanging going on.

Hacienda, new from Jeff lorber, great jazz funk, with Vinny C on drums, much different from the tame impala pop electronic crap.

Too bad that you hate Tame Impala. I checked out some of that Jeff Lorber, just to see if it was as cold and uninspired as the last time I gave him a chance, maybe 20 years ago. I found myself thinking "Are there really bands that want to sound like a throwback to The Yellow Jackets? Then I saw Jimmy Haslip on some of the stuff... oh, well. Credit for King Kong.

It would appear from that comment you have a very limited appreciation for jazz, and good chart writing, as well as musicians that can actually play their instruments, matter of taste for the most part, that said i'll bet your favorite zappa is the comical stuff .

Think what ya like. There are many types of jazz and Lorber is still a boring player.

Interesting that musicians like eric merienthal, Dave wekle, JLP, Vinny c, regularly record and tour with Mr. lorber , perhaps you should add in my opinion to you response, as many musicians I know, to include C Lamb, of brubeck Bro. fame to E palermo, think different, that's where the term musicians music comes from imho.

Well, determining if someone is good by who they hire to be in their band is a sketchy way to determine if they are good. That is an impressive list though. I've had occasion to work with Dave Weckl, good guy.

Couple years old but still performing today, yes the great Dave mathews, with Lew Solof and terry silverlight who is one of the best drummers alive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6_ris5u ... eGpIFRmHM8

Robbie Krieger's last two releases sound great! He's got Zappa alumni!

It isn't meant to be

Lyrics by Tame Impala, bowdlerized by DC Boogie and dedicated to Bravo Sierra

He doesn't like the life I lead
Doesn't like sand stuck on his feet
Or sitting around smoking weed
I must seem more like a friend in need

...

He doesn't like the friends I make
Doesn't make friends for friendship's sake
He just gets bored sitting by the lake
His soul won't surface and his heart won't ache

How interesting lyrics you can find in "pop electronic crap" (AKA psychedelic rock) these days...

No comment on Jeff Lorber's fusion.

*He hides in a comic book all 'bout big tiny elves,
Hidden behind volumes of Dumb Comics, based on his bad self.
Then he'll run across the pages like some tiny elf,
As he plucks out your sight and drinks to your health.

And you know, it's a shame and a pity,
He was raised up in the city.
And he'll never know nothing 'bout country ways.
(ah..ll 'bout country ways)

Ya mean like that DCB?

*Based on (The Not So Sweet) Martha Loraine. CJ & The Fish.
What's that smell!

The cover illustration is a troll by Norwegian painter Theodor Kittelsen :smurf:

now while it's still warm let us pour in all the mystery

I have to recommend this thing, it's fucking great - imagine a young Japanese guitarist tripping out of his head during Zappa's 1976 shows, and in 2013 still trying to figure out what hit him while the acid repercussions of Zoot Allures and Black Napkins haunt his poor demented mind...
