That's really cool. How did you arrange such a thing?

one of the kickstarter perks I believe.

This poor residents fan is one jealous guy.

Congrats!

Congrats!

I am not afraid to display ignorance here. I have heard of the Residents, but never really heard them. Any tips for a few central albums as a primer?

Here's how I did it!
Believe it or not.... I spent $1k... but, I did it on the guy who's making The Residents documentary!
http://residentsmovie.com/
In return, I get a copy of the film, a 'secret stash' of stuff that didn't make the film, an invite to the films' premiere (whenever and wherever that may be), AND........ a filmed meeting with the lead singer!!
Now, THAT'S a deal!

Now, the perfect 'missing link' from Zappa to The Residents, is a band called FAUST!
Their first three albums ("Faust", "So Far", & "Tapes"), have a beautiful 'sloppy' sound, that, at times, sounds like "Uncle Meat" AND "Meet The Residents"..... so, if you want a 'go-between' to start your Residents journey,I'd start with them!

Very cool!

I assume you also got to meet my buddy Josh Keppel. He's the guy with the crazy sideburns, who walks in with Randy at the beginning of the video.

Randy introduces him as the driver, but he's actually one of the filmmakers for Theory of Obscurity. And he appreciates your support very very much (let's just say that if he got paid minimum wage for all the time he's already put into this thing, it would completely break the budget).

Fortunately, Josh has a day job that pays him quite well and still leaves him plenty of free time to spend on projects like this. And having youth, stamina and boundless enthusiasm help too...

Oh.... I did not know that!
He was very quiet, and, during the shoot, I felt a lot like Ralphie from "A Christmas Story", when he's up on Santa's lap, finding it hard to even put thoughts together.("Census Taker"?...What's a "Census Taker"?), then, as I was falling down the BIG SLIDE of 'trying-to-play-it-cool'-ness, I felt that voice in my head, like Ralphie.....'WAKE UP,STUPID!'.

Well, he's got a copy of my novel, and I hope he enjoys it.

Hey, that was far out man! I thought The Residents were a SF bay area band. Although most of the musicians that play the bay area and live there too are from somewhere else. I'll have to watch the other episodes. BTW, how many takes and cameras where used for the final product? 8) :D

It was all 'as you see it'! The 'two awkward minutes later' bits, are just for comedy. He came in, like you see it... I was stunned.... shocked and stunned.
He must've had two other cameras that I didn't see...My little 'rant' near the end was purely a way to 'act up'. I figured, talking 'plot' would be more appreciated than just asking 'geek-out' questions... you know?

Cool and a nice edit too. I like that gorilla way of filming it all, it's fun and less editing. Looks like 4 cameras with two main camera's and two semi stationary ones. Just a guess. 8)

Very cool - 1K well spent, more than I can say about the poor RBP investors' lot... I do prefer the Residents' Theory of Obscurity to ZFT's obscure practices, for sure 8)

kool video. 8)

I was a big fan of the residents from around '75 up to the late 80s. ralph records had a really good distribution deal with getting their albums released in sweden.

but, for some reason, it all changed and it got to be really difficult (and expensive) to get hold of residents albums, and I kinda got away from them.

my favorite albums, though, are 'the residents commercial album' (the one with 40 one minute long songs) and 'the king and eye.' (the best elvis covers ever).
and, of course; the third reich 'n' roll. and 'eskimo'.

Yes, the Residents of the past 10 years has had an element of sadness to them. Every so often, though, their sense of 'fun' comes out.
On these past tours, 'Randy' talks..... he talked about meeting James Brown before he died("Demons Dance Alone" tour), and how one member has quit the band ("Talking Light" tour).

I saw The Residents on their 13th anniversary tour in 1986, and it wasn't until I heard Randy's stories on their 40th anniversary tour that I realized Snakefinger passed away the next year, in Linz of Austria ( you know, Linz, hometown of that famous vegetarian - Adolf Hitler). How could sadness not creep in? And that kind of experience contributes to the tapestry of their art - I've never seen them better than that last show a couple of years ago.

I'm glad you said tour and not show. With 13th Anniversary Show, I never know which of these 3 that people are talking about...

My favorite is the one in the middle, but probably just because I got it first.

Right up there with 'Gangum Style" & those kitty videos!
