Wouldn't Black Napkins be more of a "Blues" tune? (awesome tune nonetheless...)

"Jazz" is tough unless you're thinking more along the lines of Big Band Jazz... That said..... BIG SWIFTY!

Check the Make A Jazz Noise Here version. (I think there's more room for debate about calling "Peaches En Regalia" a jazz tune.)

Don't know if it's ' Jazz ' or not but I always loved "REDUNZL" .

Would Frank call himself a jazzman ?? :?

Agreed. Maybe Peaches is too composed. Jazz is a loaded word.

Black Napkins: The chords are jazzy chords, and Zappa is not exactly playing what I call blues. The '76 tour with E Jobson is another good example.

Let's hear it for another great jazz song, Chunga's Revenge.

it must be a camel
edmb

some interesting nominations above - the ocean, black napkins, rdnzl - jazz is definitely a loaded word; 20 small cigars has a jazz intro, the melody keeps morphing between jazz, pop & classical ... except for the solos, nancy & mary music is straight ahead jazz

uncle meat main theme ¿

Nancy & Mary sounds to me like an excerpt from a live version of King Kong.

revised music etc - the last two minutes is one of the BEST 'jazz' bits ever.

Wild Love (the "jazz" side is more evident in the long live versions than the Sheik cut)

I just checked.
Blessed Relief, Peaches and Son of Mr. Green Genes are in the first volume (5. edition). Couldn't find Eat That Question (checked also volumes two and three).

Blessed Relief is the closest Frank got to being more jazz than Zappa, if you know what I mean. All of The Grand Wazoo and Wazoo is he most jazz Frank ever got.

I enjoy all the ones already mentioned, but can we talk about Big Swifty and King Kong on MAJNH. That's one of my go-to's when craving some jazzier Zappa.

Frank definitely was inspired by jazz, or jazzy things. You can hear at least a little bit of jazz, whether in chords or phrasing, etc. in almost every Zappa album. All those albums with Tommy Mars and other late-70s/80s albums, there is fusion/jazz all over the place, sometimes obvious, sometimes not.
